Stayed here one night as was passing through Death Valley. Hotel Room itself and the location and the view was WONDERFUL, room was an excellent size but as stated previously by someone else, the Air Con is LOUD!!! but considering the heat it's no doubt working hard, personally we turned it off at night and just used the Ceiling Fan.... more

Roy and Sue UK We booked what was described as a deluxe room only to find the only difference between standard rooms and the deluxe was a television. The air conditioning was so loud it was impossible to sleep so we had to switch it off, which is not ideal in the desert. This was the most expensive room and... more

I booked via xanterra. the rooms are average, but the desert makes it top. we askes for rooms with a desert view. and we got these rooms. at 6 am everything was yellow fantastic the restaurant was not cheap (you're in the desert), but good. there are people complaining about this restaurant. I don't know why? regards schliek more

We booked this place after reviews in AAA and also on tripadvisor. We paid extra for a "deluxe room". The hotel is well located, but it has all the charm of a super 8 motel. Attendants did not even refill kleenex box. only one bed was made. Since there is no where else to stay for miles it is adequate,... more

My mate and I from Australia went on a road trip across the states last year and this was one of our stops. The campsite was mainly deserted with the temp pushing 48deg c. we had a small cooking fire during the night and to our surprise it lured in a couple of hungry rabbits. We tried shooing them away... more

In keeping with other national park accomodation, this is an overpriced room. Its easy to understand why though, because it is in the middle of nowhere. It must be hard to get staff and the running costs are surely high! It was a nice base to explore death valley though. We arrived in the early evening and everything was ready... more

I stayed at SPW with several other women last weekend and we totally enjoyed our stay! After reading the horrible reviews here at this site we were expecting much worse then what we got! The room was very clean, the A/C was not any noisier then we who live in the Mojave desert are used to. I did not see... more

After reading the reviews on here we were expecting basic at Stovepipe Wells, and we were pleasantly surprised. Yes SPW is pricey for the quality of the accomodation, but all the money is up there in location. It was wonderful stay right in the middle of death Valley, in total isolation. All that is in SPW is the motel, a... more

Be sure to take the time to turn off on the Artist's Drive side road. It's paved, and one-way, so you don't have to worry about oncoming traffic. The beginning of the ride doesn't seem like much. There's a stopping point at Artist's Palette ... an amazing splash of color nestled among the rock formations. You can take a hike... more

If you're driving on the road to Badwater, it's worth driving down the dirt road to see Devil's Golfcourse. There's not much to see, but it's worth looking at it up close. The rock formations are interesting and pretty unique. You can walk out into them and take a close look. more

Scotty's Castle

Scotty's Castle is an amazing contrast to everything else you see in Death Valley. It's a welcome change after a day or two of admiring nature. It gives you a chance to marvel at the achievements of man ... well at least those of rich men! The best thing about Scotty's castle is that it is not "restored" with pieces... more

Plus: 1. convenient base to explore North part of the park 2. resturant is good: we had two different beef dishes and pork rib. Liked it. Friendly staff Minus: 1. Thin wall can not prevent much noise. So your experience will largely depend on your neighbors. Ask for a room far away from ice machine, as it makes loud noises... more

We spent two nights at Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley National Park. We aren't picky about accommodations --especially when traveling in national parks and wilderness areas. As long as the property is clean and somewhat quiet--and is fairly priced--we're happy. Stovepipe Wells is clean and quiet but, at $120. per night, somewhat overpriced. The staff is friendly and helpful. Our... more

We spent one night at Stovepipe Wells while driving through Death Valley. We had the "deluxe" room, so it had a TV. Two double beds - quite comfortable. The room was very clean. My AAA book had given it only one diamond so I wasn't sure what to expect, but we were happy with the room. It had a small... more

Our Stovepipe Wells room did not look like the website's photo. It was ok; just don't expect the Hilton. Room was small, furniture worn. Curtains were worn. Standard room had no tv, no fridge, no phone. Bathrm was old and small. It was very clean. Bed was comfy. Anywhere else, this hotel would possibly cost arouund $30/night. It's a motel,... more

It's a little out of the way, but worth the trip. Reading the information and history of the kilns was eye-opening. And then seeing them was a real treat. There are ten ( verry large ) kilns made up of what look to be the rock that surrounds them. My advice is to take at least 30-45 minutes exploring in... more

We made a reservation at Stove Pipe Wells for our first night in Death Valley because we could not reserve a camp site. We figured we'd motel-it the first night, and see if we could claim a 1st come 1st serve tent site the next couple nights (you can only reserve one campground in advance and it was booked -... more

Stovepipe Wells is one of very few hotels in all of Death Valley so the rooms are, in my opinion, expensive. We paid $115.00 for one Friday night and our room was adequate. The thing about being in Death Valley is that you are in the northern corner of the Mojave Desert and that's some difficult terrain to navigate, much... more

Our family lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, and we wanted an alternative to the "Tahoe weekend" for the February Presidents Day break. We'd heard that Death Valley in Spring was a fabulous experience and, since "Spring" in the desert is essentially sometime between mid-February and the beginning of April, off we went. Well, actually we booked our room... more
