Traveler Reviews on Thimphu

Hotel Riverview

May 8, 2008

The Hotel Riverview was one of the most unpleasant hotels on our trip to Bhutan: the staff were unhelpful(quite unlike the rest of our experiences in Bhutan), the rooms were dirty (and not cleaned during the day: basically they made up the bed & replaced the towels). As for the restaurant...we went back to the Taj for supper on the... more

Taj Tashi

We stayed at the Taj Tashi for three nights in April 08. The hotel was exquisite: the rooms were gorgeous, with nice views (and certainly no barking dogs!) and the restaurant was pleasant & offerred alternatives to traditional Bhutanese food. Most of all, the service was great...and this is what really sets the Taj apart for me: the staff really... more

From the moment you arrive you know you are in for a magical experience that Aman seems to do best. If you have never stayed at an Aman prepare yourself, you are in for a real treat. . We opted for the entire Amankora experience, all 5 lodges in 11 days. (See my other reviews) This entitles you a car... more

You can tell that at one point, the Druk Hotel was THE place to stay in Thimphu. I get the feeling that it has rested on its laurels since those days - watching while other superior hotels (Aman & Taj) have gone up. To be fair one can't really compare the Druk with these uber-luxury hotels, but if they want... more

Thimphu, Bhutan I live in Missoula, Montana In Jaunary 2008 I returned to Bhutan to help run a disaster preparedness workshop. The Hotel Dragon Roots provided the catering for the workshop. I was a little worried when our driver brought us to downtown Thimphu. Having done research work in Bhutan 2 years ago I knew better than to stay downtown... more

Jumolhari Hotel

3 of 5 stars

Mar 24, 2008

Probably comes closest of the 8 hotels / lodges I stayed in during my trip to Bhutan to what visitors from western countries normally expect. The Jumolhari is on Thimpu’s main street. It has a pleasant ambience, the restaurant especially and the rooms are pleasantly furnished but the bed was, in keeping with most accommodation in Bhutan, too hard for... more

Phuntsho Pelri Hotel

I stayed here for 1 night in mid march. It’s a relatively new hotel just behind the main street of Thimpu. Travelling as part of a tour group doesn’t really expose you to many of the issues you usually encounter when travelling independently so my comments are limited to these: the position of the hotel is in a quieter location... more

I made my first visit to Bhutan in January 2008, traveling on business rather than with a tour group or tour operator, and accordingly had the latitude to make my own hotel arrangements. I had read and heard lukewarm comments about the existing "best" hotels located in central Thimphu -- the Druk and the Jumolhari (I leave aside the Amankora,... more

Amankora Thimphu

We had planned a trip to Bhutan to see the Fall Festival in Paro last year. We chose to use the Aman Resorts (Amankora) and couldn't have been happier with the result. Aman has a wonderful way to experience many parts of the country and still stay within their care and comfort. We stayed in a replica of a Dzong... more

Phuntsho Pelri Hotel

We were booked into this hotel on the "Gentle Trekking, Bhutan" trip with Himalayan Kingdoms. First impression of this hotel is really good - the reception area is very modern as it's relatively new. Once you get settled in, it's certainly not a luxury hotel but perfectly adequate. It has a great bar and the restaurant isn't bad either. Staff... more

Motithang Hotel

Nov 28, 2007

The Motithang had adequate rooms and adequate food. But we had no one to come in to clean our room or give us new towels. I had to ask especially for a t.v., which others had gotten. The space heater worked okay, the dogs howled but not as badly as in Paro. It was mediocre. Dark living room in the... more

The review of June 2, 2006 perfectly sums up the lack of cleanliness of our room. The room also featured a small, hard bed. We were equally displeased by the restaurant, which offered only buffet with few choices and not hot either. The only plus we found was that the wi-fi service worked consistently, although it was quite slow. more

Druk Hotel Thimphu

I stayed at the Druk three nights: two nights while on the way to Jakar, and one night on the way back to Paro. While the staff was courteous and the bathrooms were clean, the rooms themselves were dark and dingy. The furniture was old and dirty. And, I heard strange noises coming from the walls. Dogs barked all night... more

I was simply overwhelmed by the natural beauty of Bhutan. Green hills, clear rivers, fresh air, and hospitable people. The staff at Jumolhari was extra special, especially their manager, Ninzy. I was unwell on one of the days as I had eaten some food from a local restaurant, and when I came back to the hotel, Ninzy sent soup and... more

The best hotel in Thimpu. Very courteous staff. Power outages on occasion with candles used in the hallways for light. Rooms are large with adequate facilities. Above average for Bhutan. more

Unless you are willing to shell out $1000/night for the Aman, this is the default choice for most discerning travelers to the Bhutanese capital. The Druk will get some real competition in the years ahead from the Taj (under construction) and Oberoi (planned) and hopefully that will prod the owner of the Druk to make much-needed upgrades and improvements, both... more

Dewachen Hotel may not be five-star luxury - it lacks the mod-cons, but it boasts of great service, lovely architecture and a very warm and comfy bed! My Bhutan journey was a very challenging one. To get from one valley to the next, we had to drive through passes which are narrow and bumpy. Sometimes we were so close to... more

Bhutan Scenic Tours booked our hotel here which is not in Thimphu. It is in Gangtey, which is a few hours drive from Thimphu. THis hotel is great and in the middle of nowhere, near the black cranes, though we went in May and did not see cranes. We loved the hot stone bath, the great view of the valley... more

Our tour, Bhutan Scenic Tours suggested this hotel over the Julmohari because of the barking dogs in Thimphu. The room was nice and large and had a view of the river. Room was clean, hardwood floors. Bathroom was clean and simple. The hotel was undergoing renovations. The restaurant was good (not buffet). We could hear the faint noise of barking... more

The Jumolhari bills itself as a "boutique hotel." That is something it should aspire to but it's not quite there yet. However, travelers to Bhutan need a flexible attitude. Bhutan is much, much cleaner than surrounding countries but the tourism infrastructure is still small and has some way to go before being up to international standards, especially for the prices... more
