I ordered their fish stew and all I got was 6 mussels, 2 clams, 2 old rotten hunks of sausage, and 1/2 of a lobster that was not even legal to sell, since it was less than 6 inches. All in broth that smelled like vomit. And guess what folks not only was the place filled with loud regular customers... more

I am a frequent visitor of Agave in Newburyport and have been to the Portsmouth location numerous times. The food is excellent in both locations. The staff in Newburyport is outstanding, as one would expect from a restaurant that has been in business several years. The owner is oftentimes there to greet and seat you, as well as helping out... more

Bottega Toscana

I had a positive experience at Bottega Tuscana. Since the restaurant is very small, there was a short wait for dinner. But by 8pm, the place cleared out and my friend and I had the place to ourselves. They had fun italian music playing in the background, and being the only ones there, the service was excellent! Unfortunately the place was... more

The atmosphere is nice, but the food was disappointing. We went for lunch, and the menu is not very appealing. They only have one meat choice (steak tips). We thought they would offer a few other choices it being called "the black cow". We both chose Haddock dishes which were blah...and cold. This is why I prefer to stay at... more

We had a relaxing, enjoyable stay at the lovely Essex Street Inn. Our room was large, very clean, and comfortable. The fireplace and whirlpool tub were nice touches. For a continental breakfast, there was a nice variety of choices. The location is convenient, and the rates are very reasonable. We look forward to our next visit! more

Compass Rose Inn

Oct 13, 2008

We stayed at the Compass Rose Inn for our wedding weekend and it could not have been more perfect for the occasion! The staff was accommodating and helpful at every turn. The rooms and common areas are beautifully decorated and filled with natural light (which was great for photos.) Everything about the inn is top of the line. The landscaping... more

Tourist info booth recomended a couple of places and we visited 3 before choosing this one. Good choice. Quiet area an B&B. Our ground floor room was ideal and good size. price at 125 was good. Bathroom small with... more

We stayed in one of the regular rooms and were really disappointed. The bed frame was falling apart and there was a very old, stained carpet in the room. A bedside table seemed to be missing. The wooden furniture was awful, really battered with drink rings on top and the finish completely worn off in some spots. The flat screen... more

After reading the favourable reviews regarding this hotel I was extremely disappointed with my room. We began to have doubts upon entering the rather drab entrance hall and passing the poky, undecorated, windowless breakfast room. It all looked somewhat old and tired with little personal decoration. The door to our room looked like it could be from the original building... more

Agave Mexican Bistro

I visited the Portsmouth location of Agave having enjoyed previous meals at the Newburyport and Portsmouth locations. The food as always was good, but I was dissapointed that guacamole is no longer made to order at your table. The service was horrendous from the young women at the hostess desk who acted like we were bothering them to our waitress... more

We had an enjoyable dinner here this evening. Yes, the window tables are ideal for people-watching! The decor is simple yet tasteful, clean interior. The dinners were excellent...the potato gnocchi was comparable to that I've had in Italy and Boston's North End and my husband loved his fettucini alfredo. Fresh bread with seasoned olive oil for dipping was also served.... more

We stayed here for one night on September 16th. Our room was a large room with Queen sized bed (Room 104) right next to the front desk. The bed was a beautiful 4 -poster and we had a gas fireplace that was a nice touch. Bathroom and amenities were adequate ,but there was an extra sink in the bedroom that... more

This place used to be great....but now it has gone WAY downhill!! Some of their appetizers are greasy, and the service for both dine-in and take-out is terrible. The employees are usually friendly but can instantly become rude & confrontational over petty things. They also gossip about their customers and deliberately give bad service to anyone that they don't like.... more

This inn in Newburyport, while a great 19th Century building, is lacking in overall decor and ambiance compared to many other historic inns in this charming seaport town. For example, the chairs throughout the main dining areas / function rooms are black metal tubular framed, circa 1980's instead of seating that would blend with the Federal period of the rooms,... more

On a road trip through New England, we just happened to arrive in Newburyport at around the same time as we needed to find a place to stay. Newburyport does not seem to be overflowing in the hotel department, but, despite the lack of competition, we were very happy with our stay at the Essex Street Inn. The Hotel/ B&B... more

I've been dying to try Aquatini for a long time. I went in with 3 girlfriends for dinner over Labor Day weekend, and w were all extremely disappointed. Bad drinks, awful service, inconsistent food. I've been dying to try Aquatini for a long time. I went in with 3 girlfriends for dinner over Labor Day weekend, and was extremely disappointed. a) Drinks - apparently Aquatini is known for their martinis. This is not really any all that special, the simple fact is that all of the other breakfast places in Newburyport have closed up or become even worse then this place. Ordered the baked stuffed lobster assuming that was what is was versus a lobster body filled with bay scollops and tiny shrimp. No lobster claws but I think there may have been a piece of lobster in the stuffing. I believe my lobster went into other dishes such as the lobster stuff haddock. Quite a price $28 for what is... more
