I have been at the Rose & Rooster Country Lodge on a business breakaway. All we wanted was some peace a quite and that is exactly what we got. It was so quite and peaceful with a fresh breeze, a great setup for re-energizing oneself. We had the whole house on our own in a middle of a farm. The... more

We used the N3 route as advised turning off at Mooi River then followed the signs along tarred roads if quite pothold in places. The scenery was outstanding every turn a new vista. Arriving at the main gate we booked in then drove the 7 kilometres to the camp site. The office is in the curio shop again very friendly and... more

Rose and Rooster Country Lodge was an excellent experience and a much needed break away from our hectic routine. The tranquility and ambiance of this quality lodge can only be appreciated when you see it for yourself. The rooms were excellent, well decorated and extremely clean. Our hosts Stefan and Judy showed us true South African hospitality. The roaring fireplaces... more

Giant's Castle Camp

We stayed in a lovely little self-catering chalet in Giant's Castle for 3 nights in May 08. The walking is excellent in the area with a small map of day walks provided to each guest. Would definitely recommend the World's View walk. The mountain view chalets have fantastic views of Giant's Castle and are very peaceful. The garden chalets are... more

We had a lovely couple of nights staying in a self-catering cottage for 2 in Thendele camp. The cottage was much larger than we expected - with a double bedroom, bathroom, and large living room and kitchen area. The furniture and decor was all fine (nothing exceptional, but you wouldn't expect that). The kitchen had enough equipment, but not many... more

Following the 15 hour flight from NYC and the 4 hour drive from Jo'burg we arrived at Montusi Mountain Lodge around 9:30pm. We had called the lodge to inform them that we would be arriving late and were told not to worry. They took our dinner order over the phone and to our great relief we were met at the... more

We have just returned from a 17-day holiday in South Africa. Our first stay was at the Rose and Rooster Country Lodge in Winterton, a village in Central Drakensberg. The accommodation is fantastic: spacious rooms, a wonderful garden. Stefan is a great host. He serves tasty English breakfasts and dinners. We visited Giant's Castle, a great place from where you... more

We arrived and the hosts weren't there, but they had left us a note stating they would be back later and for us to let ourselves in which we did. The room was fine, although clearly quite old fashioned. We were told when we booked that we were welcome to use the bbq and since we had bought our own... more

In the middle of a South Africa trip, we decided to change our itinerary. I phoned the Cathedral Peak Hotel, based on a strong recommendation I found in Frommers. Unfortunately, I did not fully follow the Frommer advice. He suggests spending a little more to upgrade from a standard room to a luxury room. I wish we had done so.... more

My partner and I stayed at the Montusi Mountain Lodge as the first stop over on our holiday to South Africa. It was the perfect place to adjust to the relaxed South African pace of life and an unexpected delight. The sweet little cottages are very comfortable with the most wonderful views imaginable. The food is excellent and the helpful... more

We also stayed in 2 rooms at Cathkin a few weeks ago and I agree with the other reviewers. The rooms were small, poor lighting only 2 bedside lamps, no heating other than a hot water bottle, as we were in the mountains and the weather was poor it was quite cold in the rooms. The owners were away in... more

This is a real gem of an hotel. Its location in the northern Drakensberg Mountains is to die for. You wake up and upon opening your curtains you have a full view of the magnificent Ampitheatre. Every one of the delightful cottages experiences this same fantastic vista. The cottages themselves are luxurious with a patio, fireplace, sitting room, huge bathroom... more

This is a modern, elegant place. The pool is a feast for the eye, with a manmade waterfall at the end. You hear this fountain/waterfall at all times, it’s very peaceful and tranquil. The rooms are big, and there are two open doors to the bathroom, one on each side. This made us walk around in a circle in and... more

The most wonderful thing about this hotel is its position and its views - layer upon layer of mountains, close and distant, changing constantly in different light and different weather. But everything else is splendid as well. We had our own free-standing "cottage" with terrace, lounge, and two bedrooms each with en suite bathroom - for the price of a... more

Having spent a month travelling around South Africa, staying in guest houses and B&Bs which we'd booked ourselves over the internet, this was the one place which really disappointed us. The price was similar to the price we'd paid everywhere else, but the standard of accommodation was not at all similar. Foolishly, on arrival, we were asked for the balance... more

Stayed off season (mid October) on a 5 nights for the price of 4 deal booked direct, initially by email but also by telephone. They were very helpful and there were no problems. The nightly rate, even without the 5 for 4 deal, was very reasonable. The hotel is slightly remote but has a very dramatic setting (see their website).... more

Having had lunch at the Hotel on a couple of occassions some years ago, we were looking forward to spending more time here and were not disappointed. The Cathedral Peak Hotel is set in a tranquil valley with surely some of the best mountain scenery in South Africa and has activities to suit all ages and tastes. The rooms were... more

My husband is a South African from Natal. We live in the UK, but I didn't think twice about deciding to arrange our wedding in South Africa. We chose cathedral peak hotel for it's location and outstanding service. Although arranging a wedding from 6000 miles away was always going to be a bit of a challenge the staff from cathedral... more

We spent three nights at Cathedral Peak Hotel for our honeymoon in March 2006. The position of the hotel in the berg is fantastic - it really is in the mountains. The actual hotel however, is very disappointing. The decor is out-dated and ugly and the food is very average. The diningroom is character-less. My worst part of our stay... more
