Cumbres and Toltec Railroad

Oct 9, 2008

We took the opportunity to take the full length historic, narrow gauge train ride from Antonito, CO to Chama, NM yesterday and really enjoyed it. Not expecting to still see the peak fall foliage, we were astounded by the beauty, historic values and stunning beauty along the way. The operators run a very authentic, well-organized and user friendly experience. Every... more

Seemed OK on-line and I was shopping price so I called the gentleman at the desk who was very folksy and helpful. I booked 2 nights about 2 weeks in advance. We stayed in the motel section and the rooms are in very bad need of rehab. There is no internet service available. Stubbed my toe on a 2X4 block... more

It's a quaint looking inn, in the heart of Chama, right across the train station. We stayed in room number 8. The decor of the room was old fashioned "charming". Unfortunately, so was the bathroom and the insulation of the ceiling. There was one tiny sink with a spout for hot water and one for cold water. If you wanted... more

My husband and I recently took the Cumbres & Toltec train ride and needed a place to stay in Chama. Through Trip Advisor I decided on the Chama Trails Inn. Thanks again, Trip Advisor! We very much enjoyed our stay at the motel and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for lodging in Chama. The motel is right at... more

This property has two sections: an older motel and new prefab cabins near the Chama River. The hotel rooms were a little dark and drab; no pictures on the walls. The wood furniture was pretty nice, though. The room was clean. The motel advertises soundproof walls, but we were bothered by a dog next door. When we complained to the... more

When we arrived at 6 PM on a Saturday night, the place was packed. We had to wait about 45 minutes for a table, but the wait was worth it. I had the trout and my husband ordered a steak; both were wonderful. The next day, we returned for lunch and ordered some delicious Mexican food. People told us we... more

Little Creel has two types of cabins - the "old" ones and the "new" ones. Stay clear of the older cabins- they are filthy from top to bottom, have very small showers, and older beds. The duplex units 117 and 118 should be reserved for large related groups only as the walls are paper thin. The website indicates some of... more

We loved staying at the Dream Weaver Lodge in Chama. We had never stayed at a B&B before so we weren't sure what to expect. The rooms are clean and comfortable. It feels like you are staying at a relative's house. Our room was called Orchard and it was big enough for our whole family. There was a king size... more

The Dancing Wolf Resort in Chama, New Mexico is absolutely wonderful in every way. The Innkeeper, Jim, is an amazing host, both gracious and discreet. His personal touch in decoration and style is without peer. We arrived in Chama on a rainy Friday evening. Having traveled to the area quite often in the past, I was expecting a bed and... more

The Hotel

The Hotel is nice for a short stay. Older hotel but for price and convenience it was great. Only drawback is the smell of cigarettes when you walk in. I am a non-smoker and only one electrical outlet in the room. There are none in the bathroom for curling irons and blowdryers. Minor inconveniece. Train was awesome. more

Ok, don't know where to even start!!! I called twice to comfirm my reservation, and both times they knew that I had a government discount, and when I went and paid for the room it was like $70.00 more than what they quoted me, and of course no one knew what they were doing, that Friday afternoon when we checked... more

Cumbres and Toltec Railroad

Aug 3, 2008

We've never been on a steam train, and we chose the Cumbres-Toltec over the Durango-Silverton train, though for no particular reason. They both offer a variety of seating, and one major difference that I can tell is that the D-S train allows/provides alcohol. Neighbors had told us that the Chama-Osier leg was better then the Osier-Antonito leg. However, we took... more

This place is just amazing; five star ammenities. This property only has two rooms, adults only - no kids, no pets. Balconies overlook "downtown" and the Cumbres and Toltec rail yard, watch the trains coming and going with the tourists and the kids giggling in delight. The shops under the store are just super, the proprietor is just a great... more

The okays: fairly clean room; a/c works well; internet connection quickly; daily clean towels; easy check-in. The problems: squeaky floors, request a room upstairs if you are a lite-sleeper; really old furnishings; restaaurant next-door is closed but you are given a card for 10% off at a downtown restaurant (Fosters); no continental breakfastthe sheets did not fit a king bed;... more

The Vista del Rio is a nice property. The single story property is very well maintained. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Check-in was easy and staff was friendly. The only downside: couldnt help but notice how thin the walls are, During the late evening and very early morning we became too aware of the conversations of the occupants of... more

On the advice of a fellow traveller, my husband and I bought tickets to ride the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. It was unbelievable. While the seats on the first leg of the trip were perhaps not as comfortable as they might be if a couple is not precisely slender, we spent pretty much the entire trip in the open observation... more

We still can't believe we had such excellent steaks and service in this small town of Chama!! We stayed at the motel across the street (Chama Trails Inn -- a wonderful find also), and Chester recommended this restaurant, and we are so happy he did!! It is always a pleasant experience to stay in a small town and find great, local places to stay. This motel fits that description to a "T." We were in an upstairs king room for $75, so I don't think anyone can say that is a high price! The room was exceptionally clean, great bed, great shower water pressure, and... more

My husband and I and our toddler stayed here in June 2008. We chose this place because of the limited options in the area and what we could find online. At first glance, the cabin seemed cute and rustic. We encountered something entirely different: a refrigerator that could have worked much better, a non-working freezer, a rust-colored bath (not sure... more
