I had read all of the rave reviews about Granville. My family and I were staying at a condo in Yaletown, and so we took the water taxi over to Granville one evening. As it turns out, everything shuts down at 5 and 6 pm, so nothing was open. So we walked around and got a flavor for the island.... more
Positives of Granville: - One of the most innovative ideas I've seen in my life for taking an otherwise desolate, run-down, forgotten underpass and turning it into a thriving and just awesome area! Most North American cities ought to learn from what Vancouver did to make Granville such a tremendous success - GREAT job! - Cool shops, small and mainly... more
Granville Island is rated as one of the best neighborhoods in North America, it is a good story of how it was rebuilt from a rundown warehouse district to the quaint little area it is today. Lots of little shops, galleries, eateries, and the play area for the kids. Definitely worth a visit, but somewhat overrated in my opinion. The... more
The key is getting to Granville Island EARLY! The first time we went, it was too early! Most of the shops, etc opened around 9am (?). The only thing open was a yummy bakery (which we didn't mind)! The second time we went it was around 10am on a Sunday, and found plenty of parking....A half hour later (when we... more
Granville Island is a great place to get some food! We got there on the false creek ferry, which was a very efficient way to get there! We found the market has some great cake stalls, so couldn't resist tucking into some sticky, creamy cakes - yum - while sitting outside watching the world go by. There are quite a... more
I don't recommend trying to get here by car - the traffic is really awful and it is very hard to find a parking space anywhere. I tried for 2 days driving in from Surrey (1.5 hrs to go less than 20 miles) and then spent the next 45 mins trying to find parking. Worth going to for sure but... more
We took the False Creek Ferry to Granville Island from the Aquatic Centre. The ferry is $2.50 CDN/pp and is a great way to see False Creek and the Vancouver skyline. The Granville Island Public Market is chock-full of wonderful fresh foods. All of the colors there are so amazing...fruits, vegetables, pasta, fish, flowers etc. It is lively and would... more
Visited here today at around 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Traffic was just horrible maybe because it was due to lunch hour. Tip: the Granville Bridge from Westside downtown Vancouver WILL NOT take you directly to the island. It's actually UNDERNEADTH the island. Entrance only through Anderson Street. Check your map first. There's also a concrete manufacturing company in here,... more
On a recent trip to Vancouver, I wound up cycling down to Granville Island from the UBC Campus (a spectacular ride) and, after wandering around the public market, went looking for a place to have dinner before heading back. I settled on Tony's Fish and Oyster Cafe (1511 Anderson, near the bridge). It was nothing fancy, but the pan fried... more
