Don't let the name confuse you. This is a first class museum with a great amount of displays on New Zealand's history, flora and fauna, South Pacific art, etc. and has only a portion dedicated to New Zealand's wars and a beautiful area that honors those who died in them. Excellent and very interesting museum. We loved the Maori section and the War Memorial section. Unfortunately that day the Museum was full of little and not so little kids from different schools. Lots of noise and running around and above all they were not at all interested in what they were seeing. Teachers, why then going???? more

A wonderful place to visit. Excellent displays relating to Maori and Pacific Island culture, war history and memorials. It's all housed in a beautiful heritage building. Well worth spending a few hours there, or more! more

The museum is somewhat difficult to get to from downtown Auckland. The streets are sort of winding and twisting and you have to drive on the wrong side of the road. But once you negotiate your arrival, it's wonderful! The building and park are now called the Auckland Domain and Museum, there is a lot more in there than war... more
