We were very suprised how much we enjoyed the Salt Mine. You do not have to take a tour to get there. The Salt Mine offers a bus in front of the Royal Hotel twice a day. It takes about 1/2 an hour to get there. The first one leaves at 9am. When you get there you purchase your tickets... more

If you are going to Krakow, do visit the salt mine at Wieliczka - it is truly amazing! We made our own way there by bus - 5 zloty each return (about £1). Once there you the tours are compulsory (45 zl each). It's worth paying the extra 10 zl to be able take your own photographs. Don't miss it! more

I managed to drag 4 people from my hostel along with me to the Salt Mines, and let me tell you, everyone was thanking me afterwards. We caught the local bus to the salt mines (very easy) and once there hopped on an english tour. It was fantastic, absolutely fascinating. My friend suffers from claustrophobia and, except for the miners... more

Have just returned and what a fun time we had at the Salt Mine, don't bother with high priced tours, get the local mini bus from on the other side of the road from the Main Post Office on Starowislna, at 2-50 zloty each way, 50 pence, its a bargain. 15 minutes drive and you are there, there are english... more

We took the bus from the main post office in Krakow, it was very inexpensive and took about half an hour, maybe a bit longer. We gathered in a group of about 20 and started the tour dead-on 5pm. We descended the 380 steps down into the mine. Our tour guide was an accomplished English speaker and was very funny and... more

Wieliczka Salt Mine UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978. You can only enter the actual salt mine with a tour group, so look at the board just on the inside left of the entrance to see when the tours start. It is very much worth paying for the English tour which cost 60 Zloty each and lasted about an hour... more

I have been to a wide array of mines in my time. From coal in Wales to copper in Canada, so I think I am qualified to comment on this mine! Its an OK tour - the guide we had spoke English but with a very strong Polish accent, and I found it very difficult to understand at the best... more

An inexpensive bus ride from Krakow, then about a 20 minute walk. Worth it to avoid the high cost of the taxis! We could not find the mini-busses due to building work at the station! The actual mine is expensive by Polish standards, 50Zl per adult, I think. I also bought a photo pass, but my camera could not do it... more

When I first suggested visiting the Salt Mines to my father, he shrugged, uninterested in something as mundane as "salt." But by the end of the tour, he had changed his tune! The salt mine is tremendously impressive. You begin by walking down what seems like miles of stairs. At the bottom, you walk through dozens of rooms and passageways,... more

A must-see attraction. The tour takes you down a few hundred meters below the surface, to the parts of the mine that haven't been in use for a quite a while now. The chapel is probably the most spectacular item, with the altar and all the chandeliers carved from rock salt. It took over 23 years for three sculptors to... more
