I visited WSNM in March of 2007 and I'm so glad I did!!! Approaching the dunes and catching that first glimpse of them, you're not at all prepared for the way that sight takes your breath away. The dunes and hills resemble humongous mounds of snow all over the place. I arrived a couple of hours before closing, so I... more

My boyfriend and I took a cross country road trip and made White Sands National Monument, part of the journey. I had heard it was a cool place to visit and from the pictures online it looked great. We were so happy to have stopped here; it ended up being our favorite stop for the entire road trip. It was... more

White Sands National Monument is incredible. Although it's a bit of a drive from pretty much everyplace, it is worth it. The gypsum sand dunes are cool to the touch and fun for sleddding - some are as high as 60 feet although sledding is much slower than on snow. The views are incredible - like nothing else. The small... more

We drove in at sunset in August with our two kids, 5 & 7. We bought sleds and had FUN! We were all by ourselves out there and it was MAGNIFICENT! Words cannot describe. Since then we've been on a Pink Jeep tour in Sedona, toured the Grand Canyon, walked vast lava fields and still, WHITE SANDS! my children yell,... more

A great place to visit, particularly with kids. My 9-year-old loved it. We found a remote dune and he spent the biggest part of an hour climbing up and rolling down. Result: priceless photos! Only on our way out did we find you can purchase sled-type devices in the gift shop and use them to ride down the dunes (they're... more

These stark sand dunes are an amazing experience for everybody in the family -- great for viewing and photographing, great for hiking, and great for sledding. We liked the short film in the visitors center that sets up the experience for you before you take the drive in. The gift shop had saucer sleds for sale right there (we had... more

If you are on your way to Carslad Caverns via Las Cruces, you must stop and see White Sands. It is just an amazing place. The sand is as white as snow, and it goes on for miles and miles. Let me put in a plug for southern New Mexico. My wife and I both agree that it is among... more

~30 balloons launched from a parking lot and flew only about a mile or so due to poor wind conditions. Spectators brought their chairs, blankets and picknick lunches and set up on the dunes above the lot. Kids brought plastic tobogans and slid down the dunes. The white sands make a great back drop for the bright colors of the... more

We have traveled to a number of National Parks and Monuments and thoroughly enjoyed this one. Stealth Fighters flying overhead, sand that is compact and easy to walk on, who could ask for more? The dunes are as white as snow and we felt as though we were driving on freshly plowed snowy roads. One family even brought a saucer... more

Beautiful place. Nice to visit for the novelty; a day trip for a picnic. If you've climbed one large dune you've climbed them all. Pay attention to where you're at so you don't get lost in the dunes and don't forget your sunglasses, sunscreen and water. more
