The Hongqiao market was not what I expected when I first walked in...it's like a local flea market on steroids. There are five floors completely packed with sellers, and some are a lot higher-pressure than others. The top two floors are only jewelers, so they're a lot quieter than the lower three floors. I have been to the Pearl Market several times and it is always good. There are 5 floors of different goods. The pearl floor is the main attraction of the market. Here you can get pearls at ridiculously cheap prices (however always check the quality). Many sellers will also tailor make pearl jewellery to your needs. I always walk away... more

It's been a while since I've been there, but when I lived in Beijing 2002-2003, I shopped at Hongqiao quite a few times. While it is called the Pearl Market because you can get some nice pearls there, I enjoyed the other items they had even more. Just visited the Hong Qiao Market (Pearl Market) last week. It was smaller than I expected, with just two floors of vendors open. It had a good selection, though, but not vast. It is conveniently located across the street from the East Gate of the Temple of Heaven. Take the pedestrian overpass and head to the right just a bit.... more
