This palace and grounds were truly spectacular and should not be missed. We visited Peterhof on May 24, 2008 without a guide. We took a roundtrip hydrofoil trip (700 R per person) and left at 10AM. These beautiful gardens are worth a whole day. There are cafes, or take a picnic. The standard visit is 300 rubles for the lower gardens, but I wish I had also visited the upper gardens. Except in rough seas, take the half-hour hydrofoil. Note that the hydrofoil companies do not co-operate, and you must return on the one that sold... more

I had already been to several Petersburg area palaces, so I wasn't expecting to be as impressed by the extravagance of Peterhof as I was.
