I was lucky enought to have the time to make two excursions outside of St. Petersburg and to see both Peterhof palace and Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo. I have to say that I liked Tsarskoye Selo much better than the higher rated Peterhof. I was blown away by Catherine Palace and the parks surronding the palace. Just seeing the... more

The place is just awesome! A true counterpart to the famous Winter Palace - and not surprisingly, since this was the royal summer residence (while the Winter Palace was, naturally, the winter one). Catherine's palace is 26 km outside St. Pertersburg and well worth the trip. It was destroyed by the Nazis and they painstakingly restored it to its prior state. They showed the before and after pictures which were amazing. Like most attractions in Russia, without a tour group they hard to get into. HOWEVER, this is one you can do solo... more
