My family (two adults and two children--ages 9 and 4) toured the Laura Plantation in February 2008 and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Based on the reviews I read here, we made sure to plan to visit this location, in addition to touring Nottoway and stopping to see the outside of Oak Alley. I lived in New Orleans from 1979-1990,... more
I toured Laura Plantation because it appeared to be heavy on the history side, whereas other plantation tours talk mostly about their cool original doorknobs and whatnot. I was not disappointed. I'm sure it helped that our tour was led by the owner, who is absolutely dedicated to exploring the history of creole plantation life. If you just want a... more
I'll start by saying that you should not miss this plantation tour! I've been to 3 of the homes on River Road, and by far, this one is the best. Here's the impression that I had: my guide, and another guide that I witnessed -- chose the job because he was knowledgeable and interested in the property and history, rather... more
A plantation with a very knowledgeable staff, great restoration work, and deep history on display. The house is set up so that you can see how it was built and evolved over the past 150 years and every room has plenty to offer the eye and mind. All tours are guided by local adults that have a group passion for... more
An easy and interesting getaway from New Orleans, Laura plantation has done a magnificent job restoring and creating a tour that enlightens the traveler about the Creole way of life. What we found interesting, among many other things, were the existing slave quarters and being able to see how they lived, not just the opulent owners of the time. After... more
We were there Oct 2007 and was given the tour by Norman the owner of the plantation. His tour was one of the most enjoyable planation tours that we went on. There is lots to see and there is a story and tale behind everything. If there is one plantation that you have to visit, be sure to visit the... more
Laura was my favorite plantation because there is so much known about the family who lived here. The story revolves around 4 generations of women. The house (Maison Principale) was built by slaves from Senegal in 1805 and was located on a 13,000 acre land grant from Thomas Jefferson. The roof is red and the house is yellow as was... more
I was in New Orleans with friends the first weekend in March 2006 and on our last day we decided to rent a car and drive out to Vacherie and visit some plantations before we headed to the airport. Laura Plantation was the last one we visited and the best. The house was damaged in a fire in 2004 however,... more
