We've never been on a steam train, and we chose the Cumbres-Toltec over the Durango-Silverton train, though for no particular reason. They both offer a variety of seating, and one major difference that I can tell is that the D-S train allows/provides alcohol. On the advice of a fellow traveller, my husband and I bought tickets to ride the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. It was unbelievable. We did an organized tour of Colorado trains, and the Cumbres and Toltec was our favorite for several reasons. The open car offers wonderful views, and the volunteer docent in the open car was very knowledgeable and friendly. Just be sure to wear goggles or something to protect your eyes, though we had less soot on this train than the... more

My husband & I had an opportunity to take this excursion, this year in early July. It was beyond our expections. Once in a while you come across one of those places that is so special that you are torn between telling the world, and hoping nobody ever finds out so it won't change. The Cumbres and Toltec Railroad is such a place. Because of where it is located, it is one of those hidden gems. A snapshot in time, unspoiled... more

We visited Chama 3 summers in a row, beginning in 1999. Each year, we took the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad trip. The first two times, we rode the Chama, New Mexico to Osier, Colorado (lunch stop) and return to Chama leg of the trip.
