I guess if you're in San Francisco you might as well go to Pier 39 just to tell friends you did. Like others have mentioned it is a very typical tourist trap with a lot of what I call "junk tourist shops", nothing I would consider as real novelty shops. Beware the crowds are huge and on a hot day... more

Pier 39 has a great view of the ocean at the end of the pier and as you walk in and also of sea lions at one part of the pier's end. There are definitely a lot of touristy food and souvenir shops, but it's all in good fun. Most of the souvenir shops were high-priced, but the Only in... more

Beautiful place along the water, full of shopping stores, street performers, restaurants and it also has an aquarium that worth a visit (ideal if travelling with kids). I took a lot of funny pictures inside the aquarium. Hard Rock Café is there, awesome exclusive HRC items you can buy there. You can also take great landscape pictures if you walk... more

We were on pier 39 last summer and bought some fairies from Fairyland. We found some that weren't very expensive (5 bucks each) and I bought one for each of the girls in our family. Well it's been a year and my daughter dropped hers and broke it. I emailed Fairyland asking if they had them in the shop and... more

This place is far more touristy than when I went as a kid. It's mostly just an overpriced shopping center. The "Only in San Francisco" shop is great for decently priced souvenirs. The rest of the shops are neat to look around in if you like that sort of thing. The sea lions are well worth paying a visit to.... more

If your looking for big crowds and over-commercialization, Pier 39 is the answer. Sure it's got some cool souvenirs but that's about it. The over-priced food is fit only for tourists. Unless you're really into shopping for useless souvenirs, you probably won't dig Pier 39. more

Pier 39 is a fun place along the water with lots of shops, a big merry go round, the aquarium, restaurants, etc. It's also where you can purchase tickets for tours like the tour to Alcatraz, the San Francisco Bay cruise, etc. I wouldn't recommend the Bay cruise as there was nothing really special about it. We really wanted to... more

yes, it's touristy - but it's a beautiful location, there's plenty to do, and of course, there's the seals! more
