The maritime art here is really amazing. They have so much it would take hours to see it all. Not only do they have paintings that vividly depict our forgotten seafaring era, but they also have scale models of ships like the Queen Elizabeth ocean liner, and also relics from famous ships. I also visited the Chinese house. There were... more

We were lucky enough to stumble upon the PEM on a recent visit to Salem. Having had a fairly ordinary experience at one of the many Witch museums, the PEM was a real gem. When we visited we (my husband, myself & 2 daughters 10 & 7) had limited time ( wish we hadn't done the touristy witch thing) so... more

Museum itself was a little boring (other than the moon bed). There are many museums with more extensive offerings. The two New England homes included, however, were interesting, and the tour guide described how life was lived at each time period. Our guide for the homes was great; however, the guide for the museum spoke in such a soft, tentative... more

I recently visited the museum after having not been there since their expansion in 2003. I had a great time touring the Yin Yu Tang Chinese house and would highly recommend it. My niece and nephew age 9 and 11 even enjoyed the tour. To visit the house, you must get a timed entry ticket for an additional charge. Free... more

Do yourself a favor and make a point of going to the PEM while staying in Salem, but make sure you start early as there are what seem to be never-ending rooms filled with wonderful displays of artifacts from around the world. Our favorite was the tour of the Chinese house, Yin Yu Tang. For an additional $4.00, you can... more

We spent 1/2 day at the Peabody Essex Museum on an uncrowded day in March. We visited several of the historic buildings on an included tour (book ahead during busy times) and spent 1/2 hour in the Yin Yu Tang House (book ahead during crowded times). The Yin Yu Tang House costs extra and is a must; definitely one of... more

As someone who has done design work for a number of museums, I have to say that the PEM is outstanding. In particular, we made a trip out to see the Joseph Cornell show, which was spectacular. Definitely worth the price of admission for the open-minded and learning-oriented visitor to Salem. more

If you were only spending one day in Salem, you could well spend it here. The museum is attractive with nice exhibits, but what makes this a standout is the tour of historic properties owned by the museum. Included in the admission is a tour of nearby houses. This alone is well worth the admission. Get there early to get... more

Having never been to the Peabody Essex Museum before, I don't have the previous reviewers' perspectives on the museum's offerings pre and post renovations. My husband, 7 yr old daughter and I went for the first time on a Sunday afternoon about a week ago. I can say that the atrium is beautiful, a wonderful greeting and meeting place. There... more
