1. Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is Vietnam’s largest city and the cultural center of the country. There are a number of attractions within the city that shed some light on the rich history of the city and the country.
One of Vietnam’s most famous sites, this museum in Ho Chi Minh City contains artifacts and photographs documenting the atrocities of the Vietnam War.
This bustling open market in Ho Chi Minh City is the place to bargain and explore the curiosities on display. Everything from coffee beans to snake wine to shoes and clothing are available for barter in this colorful marketplace.
The 75 miles of tunnels that once provided cover to the Viet Cong army now constitute one of Vietnam’s most famous tourist attractions.
Traveling northwest of Ho Chi Minh City along the Gulf of Thailand, I would stop at Ha Tien, famous for its white sand beaches and warm water.
More popular beaches stretch out along Nha Trang, further north along the Pacific coast. This resort city would be a great place to take a day for snorkeling, swimming or scuba diving in the warm water.
Further along the coast I would visit Da Nang, a picturesque city on the Han River. Beautiful landscapes, beaches and relics such as the Ancient Pagodas of Hai Chau Pho Da Long Tho would provide an exciting day of exploration.
Housing a collection of Champa sculpture dating from the 7th to the 15th centuries, this Da Nang museum is a monument to the history of ancient Vietnamese art.
9. Ancient capital of Hue
This ancient capital of Vietnam has survived damage from war and natural disaster, remaining a city of immense history and beautiful architecture. A number of historic tombs and pagodas are worth visiting along with the fortified citadel.
10. Hue Imperial City (Citadel)
The former site of the old capitol is a fortified city within Hue. The ten gates and moat enclose a number of lush gardens, ornate temples, tombs and a palace with a grand flag tower.
11. Forbidden Purple City
Within the Imperial City there is a Great Enclosure that surrounds the remains of the chambers of the royal family. Having barely survived the ravages of the Vietnam War, this area is under restoration now and still holds a number of terraces, gardens, pagodas and religious artifacts, all organized according to the principles of Feng Shui.
In the northern region of Vietnam, Hanoi is a tranquil city that is home to a multitude of museums, including the Vietnam History Museum, the Vietnam Fine-Arts Museum, the Vietnam Women’s Museum and the Ho Chi Minh Museum, as well as such sites as the residence of Ho Chi Minh and Chua Mot Cot, the one-pillared pagoda.
While in Hanoi I would like to book a day trip to explore the three thousand islands and renowned rock formations of spectacular Halong Bay.
Finally, I would like to take a trip up along the border to China to see the Ban Gioc Waterfall which cascades downward in breathtaking descents crossing from Vietnam over into China.
