8. Oscar Wilde, Pere-Lachaise Cemetery, Paris, France

| Notorious playwright, author and satirist Oscar Wilde is interred in the famed and quirky Cimetiere du Pere-Lachaise, where life-sized sculptures and monuments to the dead fill the cemetery. Wilde’s own gravestone is carved with an anatomically correct Egyptian style male figure which was later made “incorrect” when a fig leaf made to cover the “indecent” carving was removed by unknown thieves who inadvertently made off with more than just a leaf. The cemetery is also home to such famous figures as Edith Piaf, Sarah Bernhardt, Isadora Duncan and Jim Morrison. |
