Yeah, yeah yeah. Great city for couples and romantics. But what if you're by yourself and missing your family?

This wouldn't be my first choice if it was my own money, but you can't beat the location. Just a few steps from the Metreon, Yerba Buena Gardens, Moscone Center and cable car. By yourself the 3 or 7 day pass and you can use the cable car to get to most of the places on this list. |

Cozy, cool little spot. Very friendly and talkative staff which is great when you're dining alone. I talked baseball with the head sushi chef, and shared a glass (on the house!) of a delicious sparkling saki that had just arrived with the manager.

3. Metreon Sony Entertainment Center

What better way to kill time when you're alone then a movie? Check to see what's on the IMAX theater. I got to see V for Vendetta on that - what a trip! Plus there's food, video games, and a little known exhibition area on the 3rd floor. They had artifacts from the Titanic on my last trip.

Touristy yes. But if you need souveniers for the family, this is the place to go. Get a crab to go, have a seat, eat, and watch the people go by. Or take a picture of the seals and email it to your kids, they'll love it.

Interesting place to just walk around. Stop in one of the bakeries and ask for 2 roast pork buns. It'll cost you $1.50 and will keep you fueled up while you walk around. Great for a snack on the go. This is the place to get your postcards and stuff dirt cheap. Or maybe some delicious teas to bring home.

6. Strybing Arboretum in Golden Gate Park

Need some time to unwind? Take a walk around Golden Gate park. You'll get asked about 6 six times if "you need anything". But at least the dealers aren't pushy. A simple "no thanks" and they move on. Make your way to the sanctuary of the arboretum and check out the plants, or sit and watch the butterflies.

Take a walk down Haight then grab a sausage from next door and bring it to the bar. Pull up a stool and open your mind to a world of amazing beers. No Bud or Miller here, and while the bartenders can sometimes be a bit surly, especially if you ask for tons of samples, the patrons are very sociable. Great place to try something and meet someone new.

Wi-Fi hotspot and coffeehouse. Comfortable seating, good coffee, and good food. Sure beats sitting alone in your hotel room while answering your emails.

Home of the San Francisco Giants. Its an easy walk from the Argent or end of the cable car line. Tickets are usually available either from the window or a scalper. Grab a beer and some garlic fries. After the fries, if you weren't already alone you soon would be anyway.

Great place to browse. Or pick something up and make the short walk to Yerba Buena to read. I always find business trips a great time to catch up on reading I don't have time for when I'm chasing the kids around.
