The cabanas are very basic, a bed, table and plastic chair. Our mosquitoe net had holes in it. We also had a number of visitors to the room in the form of cockroaches. The shared toilet/shower/sink area isn't the nicest, big gaps in the shower doors and regularly ran out of toilet paper. The staff weren't particularly friendly or helpful,... more

Definitely be informed before you make the decision to stay here. I booked my eight nights well in advance and paid through paypal. Because of this, there was no way (they claimed) that we could get any sort of refund. I also didn't like that they held on to your passport (we had already given them our money!) We wanted... more

Having traveled and lived in Mexico, I have always loved the friendly people. Not so at Papaya Playa! Had we not prepaid we never would have stayed. It was truly a dump - cabanas were cockroach infested and smelly, toilets did not flush properly, the suite was crawling with mold and stank. Worse still they do NOT change sheets and... more

We went to Mexico for our honeymoon and completey fell in love with the country, the culture, the people and the food. Unfortunately, we can't say the same for our 3 night stay at Papaya Playa. It was trully a nightmare. The staff was ridiculously indifferent, the cabanas were disgusting and the food was overpriced and mediocre. Both my husband... more

I have never felt compelled to review accommodation good or bad, but in this case I have made an exception. We have travelled through South America, and our last stop (where we are right now) is Mexico. After having heard so many good things about Tulum we decided to stay here for a few nights. We arrived from Peru, hired... more

as we heard from many travellers, tulum has changed a lot in the last 2 years. it has been a backpacker and hippy place, but suddenly all the hotel owners made a decision to turn it into spa/resort thing without upgrading. what is dramatically higher are the prices! we were at mazunte, pacific coast before and here you pay 3... more

Here's the skinny on Papaya Playa and the cabana scene in general as we saw it. If you're up for rustic, camping style cabanas with a gorgeous beach and don't want to pay more than $50/night in the high season, then Pplaya is a good place; just remember, you pay for what you get and there are some things you... more

Papaya Playa is truly a special place. If it weren't for the ridiculously difficult journey getting there, I may be coaxed to return. We were only staying a few nights, thus the arduous journey interrupted our 'chill-out' time. After flying into Cozumel, you get to pay for a shuttle bus (get used to these) to take you to the pier.... more

My husband and I just got back from spending several weeks in Tulum and overall had a wonderful experience and enjoyed our trip more than any we had even been on. The one part of our trip that was lacking however, was our stay at Papaya Playa. I suppose it should have thrown up a red flag when I booked... more

After having travelled around Mexico for a month, and seeing so many fntastic places, we had planned Tulum to be our last stop, to finish off the holiday with some nice days on the "idyllic beaches" , staying in a cabana. Everybody raves about Tulum - why?? It's completely overpriced compared to anywhere else -and we travelled all over Mexico.... more
