Just returned from five night stay. Booked mainly because of location in lovely traditional Lakeland village. On arrival we were greeted by friendly helpful staff. The accommodation was clean, warm and comfortable and the food was well prepared and served promptly, taking our preferences into consideration. The accommodation has retained the feel of a 15th Century Inn whilst adding some... more

Spent Good Friday at this establishment, we were booked in for three nights over Easter but found it so bad we left after the first night. It is nothing like it appears on the website, our room was on the front of the hotel and so small you couldn't swing a cat, the bathroom(?) was even smaller, just a portion... more

I have just stayed at the Red Lion for a 2 day break over the New Year and would recommend it. The management has now changed and things are well run. The staff are Romanian but their English is excellent and they are so polite. The food was also very good both on New Years Eve and also for breakfast.... more

This hotel is everything that the Hawkshead / Lake district experience should be about. The hotel has had a change of management, and what delightful people they turned out to be. The room was perfect, overlooking one of Hawksheads squares ! The dining room was nice and not to crowded. The bar with its open fire was friendly and welcoming,... more

I DID NOT stay at this pub but booked a meal for 8 people for our final evening of our holiday. The food was abysmal, service poor with a friendly waiter who spoke little English. At 9.00pm we asked for the dessert menu only to be told that the kitchen closed at 9.00pm.. It would have been good to have... more

Hawkshead is a very pleasant, oldy worldy place. The hotel was spoilt by the loud banging music from the kitchen which lasted until about 10 p.m. Am surprised that the cottages in the courtyard at the back don't complain (or perhaps they have but to no avail). It was like being in a foreign country as all the staff spoke... more

This is an old pub in the centre of one of the most beautiful and best preserved villages in England. The rooms are simple and small but everything that matters - cleanliness, warmth, hot water, good shower and w.c., clean towels etc is of high standard. The staff are friendly and varied with interesting backgrounds. Our room was over the... more

there were no complaints regarding staff as everyone was very friendly and helpfull. Yes most of the staff are foreign but they are students over in this country for a few months learning English. If you are looking for 4/5 star accomodation then this is not for you!!the rooms are outdated and reminded me of B&B in seaside resorts in... more

We stayed for two nights at this hotel in January 2007. It was perfect - full of charm and very olde worlde. We couldn't understand why some of the reviews are so negative. There are four pubs in the village and this is by far the best one. The rooms are exceptionally clean and the one we stayed in had... more
