Overlooking York Racecourse, Middlethorpe Hall is close to the City of York yet enjoys 20 acres of its own peaceful gardens and parkland. It has an award winning restaurant, the Oak Dining Room, and a heavenly spa with swimming pool. Decorated in traditional country house style, Middlethorpe is furnished with antiques and fine paintings consistent with the period of the house. Beautifully appointed bedrooms are located in the main house and the 18th Century courtyard. more » « less

I stayed at this hotel with my wife and 7 year old son. We booked a triple room, on arrival we were told that we had been given an upgrade to a suite. I must admit I was not pleased at the beginning when we had to walk down the lane to get to our room, however everything changed when... more

I spent the most wonderfully relaxing three nights in sumptuous Middlethorpe Hall. I cannot think of a single flaw, well a dash too much vinegar used in poaching my egg on the last day, but that is the level of nit-picking required to find fault ! It is perfectly located a scenic cab journey from town, yet it makes you... more

We spent five days at Middlethorpe in July 08. The house and gardens are beautiful. The accommodation [we were upgraded to a suite] was excellent, comfortable and very tasteful. The service from all the staff couldn't be better and as a person with a physical disability they made my stay as effortless as possible without making a meal of it!... more

Really surprised to read a negative review of this wonderful place and can only think that the Trip Advisor author who wrote it was having a nightmare ! Middlethorpe is a perfect country house in a lovely setting with the most beautiful gardens and grounds . The staff are kind , helpful and extremely hard working and the food is... more

I was recommended this hotel by some friends during a weekend stay in Gloucestershire; and I was very grateful for the tip. I stayed twice midweek at this property while on business in York. It is a stunning Queen Anne building, close to the racecourse but a good ten minute cab ride into the town centre. The Grange is a... more

I've done the wrong thing here which is to check-out TripAdvisor after staying somewhere. Having said that, if I'd seen all these great reviews before staying at Middlethorpe Hall I would have expected it to be really something and really something it aint. Where do I begin? Awful, dark, shabby room with 80's decor. 1980's that is - i.e. tasteless.... more

Management response from
Middlethorpe, General Manager

The team and myself, here at Middlethorpe Hall & Spa, have been delighted in receiving so many positive reviews and comments from guests over the recent years. We have also listened and learned a great deal, from the few less enthusiastic ones, who made constructive criticism and suggestions for improvements. However, we felt rather hurt and upset when we read...

We arrived early, so that we could go to morning service in the Minster. We were warmly welcomed, offered coffee until our pre-booked taxi arrived, and then left everything for reception to manage. After our day in York, we returned to find we had been upgraded to a delightful four-poster bedroom, with our luggage in place, together with a large... more

Wonderfully relaxing, lovely views and grounds. First-class staff who all appear to enjoy their jobs - any small problem was ironed out immediately. I loved the spa swimming pool - so relaxing after a busy day. The only criticism I could find (and this was difficult) was the orange juice at breakfast was not freshly squeezed and the large canister... more

We stayed at this hotel for two nights and had a wonderful break. The staff were fantastic, genuinley friendly and helpful. The room was lovely. We ate in the hotel restaurant one evening and the meal was beautiful, well prepared and well cooked and an interesting menu. Service was again great. We asked for an iron to be brought to... more
