I've just returned from City Hotel Bruninieks. A little outside Old Riga the hotel is a 15minute walk (or 6-9Lat Taxi journey) away from the heart of the City. It's an easy walk. I would reccommend this hotel as a good base but the staff are proactively unfriendly bordering on rude. A happy medium seems to be if you ignore them as much as they ignore you.
