There are dozens of hotels, bed-and-breakfasts and small inns in Avalon, so why am I returning to the Hotel Mac Rae this November for the seventh year in a row? Simple: clean comfortably furnished rooms and friendly staff that treat guests like family. This hotel also has the most convenient central location on Crescent Avenue, less than 50 feet from... more

The room itself was clean and comfortable but small. Several days before our trip, we called and requested an upgrade to an ocean view room. The view was wonderful; however, the noise was not. Noise from the street below was understandable. Noise from the nearby bar was not. Seems as though there should be some type of curfew for bars.... more

Goods: Price: There was a deal on the website for Sunday night free for a oceanfront room. We took advantage of this over Veteran's Day weekend, when Monday was a holiday anyway. It turned out to cost less than $100/night, great for beach-view Avalon! Location: Overlooks the beach and close to everything. Easy walk from the ferry and to the... more

Aye It's a Good Scottish Name. The first thing I noticed at the entrance was a warning notice that the building was not reenforced against earthquakes. Then there were twenty-seven stone steps up to the office level. The room we stayed at was the smallest hotel room I;ve seen. The glass shower door hit the wash basin. About the only... more

Please be careful when booking accommodations at this hotel. They did not honor the pricing and pricing dates (high season/low season prices and dates) listed on their website. They charged high season prices for my entire stay even though part of my stay was, according to their website, during their stated low season dates. Further, when I cancelled the reservation... more

The Hotel Mac Rae really was a pleasant surprise. After viewing their web site, which contains no pictures of the property, which looks kind of old-fashioned on top of that, I was kind of expecting the worst. But, we needed a room and wanted one that was cheap because we had to attend a wedding on the island and all... more

We stayed midweek and asked for a room in back beacause we wanted quiet. Our rate was only $55 a night for a double. It is still off season in begining of May. We stayed day before fire. It was very hot when we were there close to 97 degrees. We had a/c and ceiling fan going so it was... more

We had been warned to be prepared for scarce amenities during our visit to Catalina. We travel worldwide and so expected something European in nature. I understand limited space. I understand limited frills (no phones, bathtubs, internet connection, expanded cable). I even understand staff that is not trained by mainland standards. What I didn't understand was cheap threadbare towels, sheets... more

I researched for quite a while and decided to stay at the Mac Rae, because I am a college student and I could afford it (due to cheap off season rates) and the location looked great. But I still didn't know what to expect. I was kind of wondering why a place with such a great location whould be so... more

Took my boyfriend here for his birthday. Was a little concerned after reading some of the reviews, but decided to take a chance based on the price/location. From the person who took my reservation (ok-I went old school-by phone!) till the time we left, I have to say it was a fantastic trip! The hotel is not fancy, so if... more
