We booked Five nights and checked-out after one.....The property is expansive...the gardens adequately tended...traveller beware...pricing beyond expensive...upon our arrival we were aware that we were being charged nearly $300US plus taxes for a very standard room...since we wanted the experience of the old St. George Hotel we asked to see other rooms in various categories...in the end we chose a... more

This hotel may not be for everyone, but I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else in Algiers. It's set in stunning gardens, the common areas are beatifully tiled, and it's full of history (Allied commanders ran much of the WW II North African campaign out of here). The El-Djazair (ex Saint-George) is a hotel of historical fame; Churchill stayed there, as did Eisenhower. Fortunately, there have in fact been several renovations since then, while still preserving the historical interior. The El-Djazair is beautiful indeed. Another pro is the thorough protection they offer. There are lots of security precautions. Food is excellent, too. However, there are some catches.... more

We stayedi two nights at the start of our tour of Algeria in an indifferent room with draughty windows. In the old block the rooms are all on a mezzanine which is half a floor up or down from a lift stop - very confusing. On the first floor are the rooms occupied by General Eisenhower with a brass plate.... more

A splendid example of the "faded grandeur" term you hear used to describe Algiers itself. Stunning mosaics, fountains, and an amazing (small) botanic gardens attached to the hotel.
