If you want to escape the hustle, hawkers and tinsel tourist scene at Thamel, I highly recommend Tushita Rest House. It's in Lazimpat, about two blocks south of the Shangri-La Hotel, set among the embassies. It is pretty, clean, friendly, sophisticated, and very good value.
