Stayed here for an urban weekend getaway. While this hotel looks magnificant on the outside, things are more like a 3- or 4- star hotel on the inside. It is a crime that Taiwan's guidebooks/tourist info/the hotel itself repeatably classify this as a five-star hotel, when it is most obviously not. My guess is that there are feelings and egos... more

The place is totally awesome. May be my Chinese ancestry beckons me to like this place but staying in the main building is like living in a palace. For a little more than $200, my travel agent reserved a Prestige Room, a room with the view on one of the top three floors, the best non-suite or non-VIP rooms in... more

The place needs to be remodelled albeit that as such the hotel is a perfect showcase of madame Shek's idea of megalomania. Moreover, the food section of this hotel is way, way below standards. At 20:30 there is only one restaurant open with a buffet that makes you shiver. The alternative is the lobby, but the selection is mediocre. The... more

I'm a little surprised at the negative reviews of the Grand Hotel but each of us has our own individual experiences and perhaps mine was just a lucky one. I could also be more "lenient" because I am of Chinese descent and I'm familiar with the culture and attitudes which differ from that to which westerners might be comfortable. I... more

Just stayed here for two nights on business - This hotel is a real triumph of style over substance ! Executive suite, with 36 inch plasma in both the bedroom and suite. However when I checked in I didnt know you have to walk up a staircase, circumnavigate through a small shopping mall (toursits tacky trinkets) go outside and through... more

My wife and I have stayed at the Grand twice. It is owned by the Taiwan government and is their official guest house for visiting dignitaries. It was built to resemble the famous building in Beijing's Forbidden City, but its vermilion pillars and balconies rise thirteen stories on a hill overlooking Taipei. Ask for a deluxe, exterior room on or... more

I stayed at the Grand for a week in October, largely because it was the venue for a conference I was attending. However, I cannot recommend that anyone stay here after my experience. Yes, the exterior is spectacular, catering is generally high-quality and the rooms (I had a deluxe) look OK if not up to the standard of the Hyatt.... more

What a pretty building! However the smell and all the detail in the building are apparently aging; the lay out of the hotel is confusing as well, we were lost almost everyday back to the room; Very far from the subway station cuz its above the hill; i foresee a great hotel if the owner can make an effort remodeling... more

We stayed just one night, and overall it was a nice stay. The place is beautiful; indeed, inside and out, it looks like a huge pagoda, so if you want something generic, this ain't it. But we loved the gorgeous lobby. The room itself was definitely up to par with the Hyatt, Hilton, Westin, or other western hotels. Nice bed,... more

This hotel has definitely seen better days. The lobby has the feel of an ancient chinese palace. I arrived late at night (around 11pm) and there were only a few service staff on duty. I booked a suite which was located at the back wing of the hotel. It was quite a walk there and I'm sure we would have... more
