I stayed 2 nights with my wife booked through the web site : Japanese guest houses. It was a delightful experience. We had traveled from Tokyo by the Shinkansen Nozomi and after 10 min. taxi we arrived at the hotel for a welcome tea. We had fantastic food, and a nice two-rooms with view on a little garden. And the... more

Tamahan is a very nice, traditional ryokan in the heart of old Kyoto, about 1km from downtown. Service here is very good and english is understood quite well. all people here understood basic english and spoke enough to handle everything. the room we had was an 8 tatami one with a western toilet and shower along with a wooden bath... more

I booked Tamahan via the web and they sent me a postcard a week before our trip. The postcard was in Japanese, but very useful when trying to communicate the address to taxi driver. I stayed at Tamahan for two nights. Following tips from other tripadvisors, we took a taxi from the Kyoto train station to the ryokan. Great tip... more

We moved to the Tamahan for 1 night as the Granvia was full. If this is typical of Japan's Ryokans, this is an experience you should not miss! Worried about sitting on the floor to eat, I had requested a western style dining table and chairs. I need not have been concerned, as all the rooms seemed to have them.... more

Staying at a traditional japanese inn (ryokan) is a mind altering experience - a step back into a different way of thinking, seeing and appreciating life. The Tamahan was my introduction and it was a wonderful one at that. The inn is old, wooden, beautifully maintained, in a charming cobble stoned section of Kyoto. The rooms are functional in the... more

We stayed at Tamahan at the end of our stay in Kyoto, having stayed at the Westin Miyako and the ANA Kyoto prior to coming to Tamahan. Those modern hotels were both very nice and comfortable but they were hotels, i.e., primarily a place to sleep. The Tamahan provided a place to sleep but, more than that, it was an... more

My stay at Tamahan could not have been better. I stayed at this traditional ryokan for four nights in early September during a heat wave, yet I was very comfortable because my room was fully air conditioned. The room was lovely, on the upper level overlooking a peaceful garden with the top of a temple in the distance. The private... more

This traditional Ryokan is the most expensive hotel I have ever stayed in - £125 EACH per night - but also the best. The traditional room was masive and beautiful, actuall two rooms, more like a suite. It opened on to the beautiful little garden, and was absolutely classic Japanese style. Each room has it own small wooden bath, essential... more

I booked my stay at this traditional ryokan through japaneseguesthouses.com which is excellent site. I chose and booked our stay at the Tamahan in Kyoto in September last year and can honestly it was superb. This was my first trip to Japan and staying at the Tamahan had fulfilled all of my wishes for a traditional guesthouse with tatami floors,... more
