I stayed there for one night prior to a cruise. The front desk was very helpful and spoke fluent English. Our room exceeded our expectations and was very clean, comfortable and modern. During our stay in Rio we stayed at 2 hotels, the Intercontinental and the Lancaster othon (see my other review) I was not impressed with the Intercontinental. It was just a plain hotel, rooms small and dated. The Beds were much more comfortable than our previous hotel, but..for the money, I think I would have saved it and found somewhere... more

I agree to some extent with the comments about the location. You're certainly out of the action, but maybe that's a good thing given the reputation of Rio? Christmas in Rio de Janeiro is not as busy as New Year's or Carnaval but the hotel was quite full, especially given the airline crews that stay there.
