This place is pretty nasty. It's not a nice area and there is a check in window with a barrier. The rooms are not as well appointed as other HIEs I've been to and the rooms are not very clean. In fact, there is a used bar of soap sitting in the bathtub of my room. One of the lightbulbs... more

Although a bit pricey at $207+ tax per night, my King Suite with whirlpool tub was clean, comfortable and large! The breakfast selection each morning was a treat, everything from mini cheese omelettes, greasy sausage and fresh biscuits with gravy to fresh fruit, yogurt and a nice selection of breakfast cereals. The coffee was delicious! The neighborhood is a little... more

I came to Berkeley with my family recently, and had initially booked rooms in the Hotel Durant. Although the Hotel Durant was helpful-- giving us adjoining rooms-- they were under construction and let me know that the hotel would have no heat during our stay. The Holiday Inn Express was a great alternative at the last minute. They booked us... more

My husband and I reserved a mini-suite at the hotel so we could entertain our kids who live in the Berkeley area. There was plenty of seating for all 7 of us to visit and play board games. We felt safe enough to stroll about 4 blocks up University to Fellini's for dinner at 8:30 p.m. (Delicious food, by the... more

Despite many of the negative reviews about the hotel, I found the HI Express in Berkeley to be very nice. They had comfy beds, nice pillows, a nice breakfast and it was quiet. There is a great bus system and you are walking distance (less than a mile) from the North Berkeley BART station which will get you around the... more

The HI Express in Berkeley is a reasonable hotel. Pros: Sturdy cribs, nice hallways and entryway, fridge, sink, and microwave are *very* handy. Most of the hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. The Foster's Freeze almost next door is great for a convenient treat. Lots of parking. Pretty easy access to downtown/university/freeways. The beds are firm (but I like... more

We stayed one night with our 6 and 2 year old kids. They were nice and let us check in early. We had a king suite and it's not really a suite, there is a tiny piece of wall that divides the couch area from the bed area. It was just fine for one night, though. The place was clean,... more

My daughter and I stayed three nights here on a visit to local colleges in Berkeley and San Francisco. At over $150 a night it seemed a little expensive for a Holiday Inn. You definitely need a car to get around as the hotel is not near any major sites. The hotel staff is not friendly and not very welcoming.... more

In my continuing struggle to find decent accomodations in Berkeley I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express for three nights. In respect to prior reviews, there does appear to be new mgmt. The managers were very nice however.... I ended up in a smoking room for the first time ever anywhere! The second floor is half smoking/half non smoking, which... more

Holiday Inn Express in Oakland, CA Room was above average with great sticky buns for breakfast. Used Airsuburban to go to and from Oakland airport. Very clean, new car and great driver (Keith). Ate at Spengers Fish Grotto twice at 4th and University. Great food and very attentive and fun waiter. Date: 8-2006 more
