We have just returned from a 3rd visit to Zanzibar. Matemwe Beach Village was absolutely superb, and unlike other "Western" resorts, it utterly encapsulates the true Spirit of Zanzibar! From the most friendly and helpful of staff, to the most comfortable of accommodation (Zanzibar style), and fabulous food!!!! The Boma and Pool evening meals were absolute decadent highlights! The beach... more

We spent 10 nights on a wonderful private safari, and thought that we would like to see Zanzibar. Our agent booked this place, and he did a superb job with the rest of the places, but it totally disappointed me when I saw this place. It is over an hour to StoneTown. There is absolutely nothing in Matemwe, and no... more

First off we didn't go there to dive. Regardless of this Matemwe Beach was a MAJOR disapointment having stayed at Pongwe Beach first. The Staff made us and the other handful of guests as though we were actually putting them out (at one point there were only 4 of us staying there). The Manager was unwelcoming and it proved to... more

Myself and my partner stayed at Matemwe for 10 days and I would highly recommend the place. We stayed in one of the suites, unfortunately, not sea-facing but still very comfortable, aside from fighting with the mosquitos all the time!! The hotel staff were all extremely helpful and friendly and we left feeling like we had made friends with most... more

Stayed for 4 nights, in a suite. We were there in low season and the hotel was very quiet and there were alot of mosquitos. The suite itself was lovely, but difficult to fully make use of the open air areas due to the mosquitos. The pool was lovely. The food was good with a varied snack menu. The beach... more

We stayed at the Matemwe Beach village for four nights in February after reading several great reviews on Tripadvisor and I'm happy to say that we were'nt disappointed. We had a super-relaxed holiday and the hotel was a large part of it. We stayed in the standard room, the Shamba Suites and the Honeymoon (Asali) Suite and got a flavour... more

I should preface this review by mentioning that accommodation in Zanzibar is ridiculously expensive for what you get. Comparable locations (such as, say Sri Lanka, Bali etc deliver far more quality and style AND a more interesting travel experience) at a fraction of the cost of Zanzibar. Everything appeared to be in US$ at US$ prices - hotels, taxis, drinks... more

I am of course very disappointed to read this review. I offer wholehearted apologies for the state of the bathroom. The humidity here does create a lot of damage but there is no excuse for the state of the shower and I can assure you that this resulted in an immediate staff meeting and action. This is certainly far from...

Matemwe Beach village is a really nice option to stay around the Kiwengwa/Matemwe area. Matemwe is about 5-6 km's from the rest of the hotels in Kiwengwa. The beach is really nice and secluded. The food is good and the pool area really really nice. They have only 2 rooms with air conditioning ( numbers 1 and 2) so make... more

We booked over the internet and were very pleased with our stay. The hotel is a collection of nicely furnished separate and attached rooms with thatched roofs many right off the beach--separated from the beach by a slight elevation of land and not more than 20 meters. At the beach, in the palms, there are several covered kiosks with lounges,... more

This place was incredible in every way. The staff of the hotel and dive center were all incredibly gracious, friendly and helpful. The food was great and so were the drinks. Every third night there is a special dinner outside the dining room that really keeps monotony from setting in. One night they even gave us our own table at... more
