My trip is totally unexpected having decided two weeks ago to try AXA. The air and room will kill my budget so Caprice and other places, we cannot afford. My teen is West Indian and we LOVE roti and local eats. We have Smokey's and B and D on our list. Anything else please and thanks. We are in AXA the 16-19 Aug.

Thanks

Lucys on the right going down to Malliouhanna--English Rose in the Valley, E's Oven--1/2 Chicken for $12-excellent. Hungrys Van in the Valley--You can take it back to where you are staying. For lunch Chicken salad sandwiches from Fat Cat Gourmet by Lakes super market. They have an excellent crab quiche $20 which you can also take with you and eat in. There is a place called Roti Hut which is on the right going from the road to Blowing point toward the Valley. Haven't eaten there so don't know what it's like. Believe fish and chips at Roy's in Sandy Ground is relatively inexpensive.

Johnno's at Sandy Ground for people-watching; wicked domino's action; mango coladas; and a fresh fish sandwich that's hard to beat. Also, pop down the street from there to Elvis' place -- hard to get more local than that! Lucy (at Lucy's), right up the hill from Malli, has been cooking on that island for 30-40 years (raised 7 kids there). The food is great, reasonable, local and her stories are a hoot.

My favorite roti place was Roadwell Cafe which closed "for good" then re-opened a day or 2 a week -- I don't know the status now but it's worth looking into. Also, there's a good place on the back road where the Overlook is (Rafe's???) -- I think it's still up & running.

B&D's is only open Thursday-Saturday -- is that when you'll be there?

You're not going to want to sit and enjoy the vibe at B&D. Most people do take out. Okay since you have four nights recommend E's Oven, English Rose, Smokeys and Lucy's for dinner Or you could substitute Roys for one You could do lunch at Roti Hut, Manderiman, Elodias Or Fat Cat (THey have a couple of tables but not much vibe). Believe English Rose has a lunch Buffet. Splurge one night and do Bananas. Elodias and Gwens normally have music Sun Afternoons but since off season is approaching may not. Call first and ask

Wow Carib:

You got enough superb advice from MaryGG and HowardC, two of the most knowledgable posters on this forum, to last you forever. You'll have enough to eat for waaaaay more than just 3 or 4 days!

Bon appetit!

Just wanted to include Ferryboat Inn. They are known for their burgers and rum punch.

Proctors, a large grocery store in The Valley, has rotis Friday and Sat., available at 10 a.m. for $5 US. One day it Guyanese, the next Jamaican (not sure which is on which day). Delicious, they go FAST. Roy's (Sandy Ground) has his Happy Hour dinner specials for $14 Friday, you must order by 7 p.m. Fish and Chips are GREAT. Ripples, Sandy Ground, has a Sat. dinner special for $12 - not sure the time deadline for ordering, probably 7 at the latest. Both are great.

If you are staying on the east end of the island, Le Bon Pain is great for breakfast but most people don't mention that they also make delicious sandwiches. They are inexpensive and you pick up on your way to whatever beach you decide to hangout for the day.

For a local "vibe", try "Jazzy's" in Stoney Ground, just past the Hideaway Grocery. I'd guess it to be less than 5 minutes past Albert Lake's Supermarket in the Valley.

Jazzy's was a very popular place with locals and very moderately priced. We were there last in 2007 and the ribs, chicken and other simple finger foods were very good. I'm not sure that I'd be quick to recommend any of the other local chicken n' ribs establishments to enjoy a local vibe. "Rafe's" on Back Street (per Mary GG - hiya counselor) has recorded music, they're only open on weekends (except Carnival time when they're generally open every night). Please note... Rafe's can get a bit rough and rowdy around Carnival time.

Enjoy. Zabar
