My fiance and I are trying to determine where to go on our honeymoon next August, and Bermuda is a possibility; however, we're worried about the chance of a hurricane in August. Locals, is it common to have hurricanes pass through at this time? Last year, I was stranded in Cancun during a hurricane, and I really don't want that happen on our honeymoon! Please help! Thanks!

Nobody, locals or otherwise, can guarantee weather. They can say it's not common which is true. Nobody wants it to happen to them, honeymoon or no honeymoon. But you are probably more likely to be run over by a bus than hit by a hurricane. Joking aside, you take your chances wherever you go in August if you choose the usual hurricane areas.

As stated, certainly nobody is able to predict such things in advance, although it is always a possibility during hurricane season. Just to set your mind at ease a bit however, the buildings in Bermuda are built so strongly, and able to withstand strong storms, and most hotels have wonderful backup systems in place, so that as a tourist you would be well cared for. (Some Bermuda hotels even offer a "Hurricane Guarantee" - check hotel's websites)

We've vacationed in Bermuda during the month of August five out of the past seven summers. Our weather has always been hot and humid, with mostly, only occasional showers. I do say mostly because as we were leaving the island a few years back, there was quite a rainstorm but by the time we got to the airport, it had passed. Twenty eight years ago, we honeymooned there during the same month and again, had great weather. I wouldn't worry about it.

we don't usually get hurricanes in july or august, but we are facing the possibility of dealing with hurricane bertha between thursday and saturday, a very rare situation. the most active month for hurricanes tends to be september but obviously mama nature wants to remind us of who is calling the shots.

With so much to worry about with a wedding, if you are the least bit concerned about hurricanes, I would choose someplace else to honeymoon and then plan a trip to Bermuda when it is not hurricane season. No need to stress over something you cannot change like the weather.

Some places far down in the Carribean are good choices because hurricanes do not tend to go that far south.

Just a thought....

Please don't take this personally, but I'm sorry, I don't know how you can say that. Your statement could not be more incorrect. Hurricanes are less likely to go South in the Carribean? Really? They are hit FAR more frequently than Bermuda and are actually MORE at risk than us during Hurricane season. Not to mention, they have warmer water down there which only feeds to the strengthening of these storms also.

It is a LOT less likely that Bermuda gets hit than most places in the Carribean.

I am talking about places such as Barbados in the most southern parts. Check some of the statistics. Yes they too can be targets, but much less so than the Bahamas and parts of Mexico. But even living here, it is all a crap shoot from June to October.

Nothing personal against Bermuda intended.

These days I don’t think anyone can guarantee anything about hurricanes. That being said, I experienced a few during the five years I lived in Bermuda but would not worry about traveling there during the season (June to December). The good thing was that we never really got a direct hit. They came close, as with Bertha, but mostly skirted the island. (I think the deep water and the Gulf Stream drives them east or west of the island.) There were enough high winds to cause damage – but nothing on the scale you see in the Caribbean.

My husband and I just booked our 18th visit to Bermuda! We have always gone between the 10 and 31 of August and NEVER have gotten a hurricane. One year our last day rained as a hurrican was approaching.......and that was Fabian....I say go for it...it's the only place to go!
