I am a responsible traveller who happens to smoke! We cannot carry lighters on flights to ( or from) Barbados, so will want to buy one asap once off the plane.

Are lighters available to buy in arrivals area of the airport ? Can I buy one in the cruise terminal ? Would I be able to use it !? I don't think they're sold on the cruise ship.

Any pointers happily received ( no need to tell me to give up tho !!!)

There are shops in the mall at the cruise terminal that sell lighters. If you are taking a cab just ask the driver to stop at any of the numerous convenience stores on the way to the cruise ship dock.

By the way: Give it up! :D (sorry couldn't resist)

If your desperate just ask for a light of someone as soon as you clear customs and are outside. There is always someone skulking around with a ciggie outside arrivals (I know, it is usually me, as soon as I arrive)

or pack it on the inside zip of your checked baggage and retrieve it once you're outside the terminal.

I think in order of preference ...as I'm usually stressed enough that I arrive, my bags arrive and nothing goes wrong before i get where i'm going !! ( Am gonna need to get me some 'chill' me thinks !!)

(i) Plead for a light from someone who is already puffing away outside the airport whilst waiting to be shuttled to the cruise terminal

(ii) Hopefully grab the chance to get the to Mall before boarding the ship - does anyone know if that would be permitted ?

We have the evening in port and the following day before setting off so should be able to get sorted !!

Any recommendations for an evening post travelling ?

whenever ive sailed from barbados you get bussed from plane runway to ship no way will you be able to smoke until you have checked on to ship.you never go into the airport area:( a word of warning when flying back to the uk do not go into airport lounge until last minute as you cant smoke in there either .stay outside for as long as possible.ps you will get away with taking a lighter in to barbados its getting one out thats a problem.

Not sure why you think you cant carry a nighter. You can carry one lighter on your person. I dont smoke but always have a lighter for candles (the mosquito type). The lighter must be of the disposable type. As someone else said however you may have a problem when you are travelling back via Barbados. They seem to have different rules.

The guidelines on the Virgin website was a little conflicting, so I e-mailed customer services. They have confirmed that cigarette lighters including butane, absorbed-fuel (Zippo-type), electric/battery-powered and novelty lighters can be carried in passengers hand and checked luggage on all flights with the exception of: Barbados, Antigua, Grenada, Tobago, Nassau, Havana, Delhi and Mumbai.

I don;t know why the distinction - but I'm not going to argue !!

'Please note Christmas crackers, party poppers, cigarette lighters and non-safety matches may not be carried. However, you can carry one cigarette lighter on your person. Lighters that are refilled with flammable liquids (for example 'Zippo' type lighters) cannot be carried at all.'

The above was taken from BAA web site.

The undernoted from the Virgin site

'However, the following items are permitted:

Cigarettes.

Cigars.

Rolling tobacco.

Cigarette papers.

Common cigarette lighters, one per person may be carried.

A single book or box of safety matches.'

As I said previously it will be ok to take the lighter into Barbados. May be difficult taking it back out again.
