We are planning a vacation for Thanksgiving week, 08 using a timeshare and one place we found is Sun Village Resort...Cofresi...I read only one review that was half-way positive. Has anyone been there recently? We have never been to the DR before and have no idea what to expect. I usually weigh all reviews and see a mix of negative/positive then we have to weed through what is written, but here, even tho it looks beautiful (of course), I can not find too many positive aspects of the resort. We of course want beach front, with pools that are deeper than 6 feet. Food...we usually go into the town and eat where the locals eat. We expect the room to be clean, and we want to be able to control the AC. A balcony and with a view is another must...more than a standing one. Is there a town close by? So, if you have stayed at this resort recently, will you please let me know if it was worth it! Thank you

we were there at christamas and loved it.

There is not a town nearby and taxis are expensive. We had no problems with the food and drink in this hotel, and the pools are so relaxing, no rush to get any sunbeds anywhere. would go back tomorrow.

hope that helps you

Thank you for your post. Did reading the reviews before you went concern you? Can you tell me if any of the pools are deeper than 4-5 feet? Maybe things have changed since the others who reviewed it was there, because there seemed to be the same comments with many of them, problems with AC, food was bad, etc, funny tho that everyone loved the grounds...

thank you again.

I am 5ft and couldnt reach the floor in some pools, so they must be deeper.

I have read the reviews before and after we went and they are such a mixed bag really,

all i can say is what we experienced and we had no problems what so ever, with anything at all

Hi, me and my girlfriend travel of Friday and we can't wait. Only recently have there been bad reviews about the food before that they were all more or less good. Some reviewers have individual traits (e.g. picky people or generally hard to please) which you always have to bear in mind.

I do know that a lot of the resort is being renovated at the moment so that may lead to probs with rooms or the AC. I'd be happy to get back in touch when we get home???

Cheers, I presume it must be a big complex so thats why it's taking a while. Apprantly it's the standard rooms being updated, we're superior so hopfully will be fine. Wouldn't be a normal holiday without one hitch anyway!!

There are several restaurants nearby which in my opinion blow the restaurants at Sun Village out of the water. The following are all within a 5 minute cab ride: Los Tres Cocos (Excellent Austrian chef), Los Dos (Also Austrian), Le Papillon (French), Chris and Madys (American/Canadian/Dominican Fare), Cofresi Bar and Grill, the Ocean World Marina restaurants, a good pizza/pasta restaurant across from the beach bbq rest. Ahora, and many others a little farther away in Puerto Plata. The food is generally inexpensive but great. Makes up for the cab ride which will be about $10 US max.

Thank you all. I do know you need to read through reviews and forum comments carefully and sometimes there are those who can not be pleased, or I read some of the complaints and just don't get it, but my concern was so many people had the same complaints. Then I realized most of these people stayed there in 05/06/07.

giuse19dog, it would be great if you would let me know how your vacation turns out.

As I mentioned before, rarely do we eat at the hotel, so that is no big deal.

One other question, what about sightseeing? I have not investigated the area at all, but we like to rent a car for a day to sightsee and pick up snacks, water, etc for the room. Are there tours available? For the most part, we like to live at the pool or beach, but one or two days, take any unique tours that may be offered.

Thank you all again for your input!!!

If you are sightseeing on your own, the easiest thing to do would be to take the teleferico (cable car) up the mountain that shadows the resort. There are stunning views up there and it is easy to walk around the Trujillo gardens without a guide. The cable car ride itself is I believe 5 dollars. I noticed that your little picture beneath your name has a waterfall. There are 27 waterfalls, Damajagua Falls, just outside of Imbert about 15 minutes west of Cofresi which can be climbed with the help of a guide. The tour is extremely challenging as you are swimming up river at times and climbing ropes to get past waterfalls but the experience is great. On the way down, you can either slide down the waterfalls or jump your way down. Some of the cliffs are about 30 feet high and it is exhilarating. Local horseback riding tours are also very fun.
