I will be going to Guadalajara the end of July for a couple weeks on business. Is it possible to hike or explore the surroundings. Does any one have any suggestions for any similar type of activities? I realize it's a big city but thought we could venture out of town a day or two.

You can escape to "La Barranca" they have some walking trails and restaurants with a nice view that you'll forget you are in a big city.

You could take the local bus to Teuchitlan and then hike up to the ruins at Guachimontones: little visited and with great views over the surrounding countryside. If you have a night to spare you could stay at Hacienda el Carmen, which is a short cab ride away from Teuchitlan. Highly recommended.

Go to Mazamitla (it's about one hour from Guadalajara)

It seems that the English version doesnt work, but this can help you:

If you are really adventurous, go to Colima and hike the volcano. Colima is 2 1/2 hours from Guadalajara.

The hills by Lake Chapala offer interesting hiking opportunities and it is only 40 minutes from Guadalajara Metropolitan area. Tapalpa, about 1 1/2 hours from Guadalajara is also a great option although a further drive.
