Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had the same experience.

My new husband and I were on our honeymoon at the Palladium sitting kind of on the ground waiting for the trolly to come when I think something bit my lower leg twice and my upper thigh once (all the same leg). It itched like mad like a misquito bite, and I didn't think anything of it.

Next day

One of the bites on my lower leg swelled up to about 8 inches long by 3 inches wide, VERY red and hard, and super hot to the touch. The other two swelled up bad too but not quite as big.

Later that night

My lower leg started to get numb and my whole leg was in pain, my glands in the groin area swelled up and my lower right abdomen was in pretty bad pain. The gland swelling might have been seperate but it seems coincedental.... since I had a bite in the upper thigh as well. I was having trouble walking at this point.

The next day, looked the same, still hurt, hard to walk. STILL didn't go to the doctor because.

At this point I wanted to go home to the emergency room in the US, but we only had a couple days left on vacation so I was just hoping for the rest.

THEN IT GOT WORSE! The next day the bites turned purple and looked like horrible bruises. It looked like someone took a crowbar to my lower and upper leg. They still itched like mad!

Eventially, they kept getting better, and now they are just small bumps you can barely see 2 weeks later?

Anyone have similar experience or any idea on what I could have had?

Yes, I did have a weird experience. I don't know where it came from. My belly mysteriously had three long thick purple lines almost like large tenticles or plant leaves left an imprint. It was sore and hot. It slowly faded almost peeled a bit, like a burn, but now 6 months later you can still see where it was. I searched the internet trying to find out what it could have been, but came up nothing.

I am a Brit who moved to Canada many years ago. In those early years of living in Canada I would often get a mosquito bite that would reek havoc - similar to what you describe with the swelling and I ended up at the Emergency room more than once. Luckily I got antibiotics and antihistime before it got worse. It could cause a serious infection which is what it sounds like in your case. Now I'm not saying it was a mosquito - could have been a spider or some other bug, but the point is it could have been anything and you had a bad reaction to it. I *always* have antihistime on me, especially in the summer time and when on vaction. Although I haven't had a serious reaction in a long time, I'm always cautious. Sounds like you were lucky.

It sounds like a Brown Recluse spider bite. My mother-in-law had a very similar experience and was in such pain that she had difficulty walking. She sought immediate care in Mexico. Care in foreign countries is sometimes better, as the local doctors are familiar with the types of diseases/insects in their area and know how to treat them. You were very lucky.

I thought that Brown Recluse spiders weren't in that region though. I had thought of that...
