I know a lot of you have been following my story and I have an update. I just got word from the health insurance company that they have approved my claim. Yea!!! Finally!!! It's been 8 long months.

I knew we were covered when we paid up front to be med-evaced, but I still wish we had purchased travel insurance. They would have paid the up front costs in Cabo and been on my side fighting with me during this whole process. From now on I will.

Hi NewGrama, glad to hear the red tape has been cleared. I didn't hear all the details prior but I'm wondering about travel insurance myself and tell me more about medevaced? Thanks!

Whew! What a struggle that was. That's great news.

For the newbies, NewGrama had over $30,000 in out of pocket expenses getting Dave med-evaced back to the states. And as she writes it took 8 months to get the claim approved. Not many of us can handle that kind of expense. Make sure you check into travelers insurance before your next trip. From now on we will too.

Lisa - It was very scary. Last November we had only been in Cabo 3 days when Dave woke up sick. We got checked out by the doctor at the resort and he said Dave had had a major heart attack. We paid $31,000 on 3 credit cards to get treatment and be med-evaced to San Diego.

It turns out there was no heart attack - it was pneumonia that was affecting his heart rhythms. We filed the claims (in person) as soon as we got home from San Diego. First the insurance company lost them, then they denied them. But I kept after them and now it's finally been approved.

Thanks for clearing that up. Cathy, can I ask what you recommend to do in, God forbid an emercency were to happen while in Cabo? What would travel insurance have done differently than what tragically happened in Dave's case? I'm sorry to bring up bad memories. I'm sure there are other TA'ers who may be considering travel insurance and maybe this could help as it's valuable info for all of us to know. Thanks so much.

What a relief!! Interesting to know how hard you have to fight for the medical care that you pay dearly for. And heaven forbid you are late with an insurance payment.

Someone had posted a travel ins. company that only costs around $89 and covers all that. Does anyone remember what it was so others can save it for future needs?? I was going to look into it for my mom when she traveled with us.
