Hi due to time issues we want to drive from Whistler to Jasper in one day in early Sept, I have checked the mileage and know that we will miss the chance to take our time to experience the beautiful scenery as it should be seen, I have been told the journey will take approx 10 hours, I do not know he roads in that area to judge by my normal driving speed on journeys of that size, are the roads mostly highway and easy to navigate.

Many Thanks

Once you hit highway 5, it and highway 16 all the way to Jasper are paved two-lane highways with 90 to 100 km/hr speed limits. This is a major trucking corridor so you will be sharing the road with lots of 18-wheelers, vacationers, RV'ers etc. Haven't driven the rest of it in a very long time.

The worse stretch of road is between Pemberton and Lillooet. I was on it last weekend and it is very rough. So plan on 1 1/2 hours for that portion, which is 100 km long.

It's also very twistie and somewhat narrow, but that is/was part of the attraction.

All the rest of the roads are good.

Whistler to Kamloops should take 4 hours.

Kamloops to Jasper 5 hours.

And don't forget the time change.

I, too, will be driving from Whistler to Kamloops (actually, Valemount where we are stopping for the night en route to Edmonton). I used to live in Vancouver and have driven the sea to sky many, many times (although haven't been up there for about 5 or 6 years). I have never driven through Pemberton, Lillooet, etc and have heard it is quite a narrow, winding mountain road. I am a good driver and not particularly nervous, but after a few comments I am wondering about this route. I have a good vehicle (small SUV) and don't mind taking my time, but would appreciate any comments about the drive. Maybe I would be more comfortable going back through Vancouver?? (although this would add a significant amount of time onto the trip).

Only alternative is to drive back to Vancouver then out hwy 1 to Hope then hwy 5 to Kamloops and on to Jasper. I wouldn't worry it's not a speedway just a mountain road. The Transcanada used to be just as windy and narrow in many places ( still is in a few) and tons of people have driven it. Just don't expect to drive 100km per hr all the way and you'll be fine. Many of our "highways" are two lane, with narrow shoulders, wind around mountains or beside rivers. It comes with the terrain here. Personally I think there is a stretch of Hwy on the way from Penticton to Manning Park that is by far one of the worst to drive.

here is a link to a web site that shows actual photos of the hwy and the vistas you will see. Pretty spectacular and not to be missed!

hi traveller47 thankyou for the link the photos help a lot to get an idea of the roads, would you mind answering one more question for me, the part of the road that would worry me the most is the steep decline on the narrow mountain road section, any idea on distance for this part of the journey.

many thanks
