Cost of train from Villach to Venice? Flights to Amsterdam? |
|
I am looking into taking the high-speed (3 hour) train from Villach to Venice on 17 August. It leaves at 10:30am and arrives at 1:30pm. For anyone who has taken this train, what is the approximate cost? I have heard that I should book ahead of time, but I can only find prices on the RailEurope site, which I have also heard is not accurate as to prices-- it lists the cost at 42 dollars per person. Secondly, if I had the choice of taking a flight from either Venice or Vienna to Amsterdam that are about the same price, which would be more convenient, both time- and price-wise, by train from Villach? Would I be able to use the Einfach-Raus-Ticket from Villach to Vienna on that day if I chose to take the Vienna-Amsterdam flight instead? That could mean a large savings and may not make a trip to Venice for a flight worth it. I was thinking that Venice would be faster and a little less expensive to fly out of than Vienna, but I guess the cost of eating and sights in Venice would also be more expensive. Thoughts? Thank you for your help! |

International train fare inquiry is mostly complicated..... The train ride to Vienna takes at least four hours. The Einfach-Raus-Ticket is subject to rules that don't comply with your itinerary. Only Regional Trains may be used what means a travel time of almost seven hours to Vienna (because of necessary transfers as regional trains aren't designed to run nationwide). If you have the time and the nerves (and at least one travel buddy as there is a minimum of two passengers), you can travel on the ERF to Vienna. But I recommend to refrain..... I assume you would fly from Venice-Treviso (TRF) airport which is located North of the city, but is not the respective aerodrome of Venice. So calculate a little more time to get to the airport. If you depart from Marco Polo Airport it would be much easier. It depends on what you like more. Venice is a city that everybody should have seen in a lifetime. But Vienna isn't bad either..... :-)

Thank you very much for your reply. This is interesting to know about the ERF tickets. Are they useful going from Vienna to Salzburg? That would be my other main trip within Austria (and then Salzburg to Villach). The flights I'm looking at go out of Treviso and Marco Polo; I haven't decided which I'll take yet but the Marco Polo flights look better at the moment. There is also one from Bergamo that I'm looking into. I can fly to either Amsterdam or Paris. Thanks for your help! I am easygoing when it comes to places to go because I like to see it all :) I can't wait to see Austria.

Einfach-Raus-Ticket ÖBB train schedule: http://fahrplan.oebb.at/bin/query.exe/en (Products> Einfach-Raus-Ticket) Of course it is applicable but it takes much longer... By the way, it should be ERT and not ERF! My little fault.

Villach to Venezia Santa Lucia is € 30 (standard fare, 2nd class) € 45 (standard fare, 1st class) incl. seat reservation. Reductions for children, people younger than 26 and seniors. Usually no problem to buy a ticket just before you go.
