Is Egypt Safe to Visit |
|
Hi I am thinking of going to Egypt on Honnymoon next year and I hear different reports that it may not be safe to visit. I would appreciate the opinions of people who have been there. Also any reccommendations people may have about best resorts places of interest etc |
|
Ok first of all egypt is now VERY VERY safe to visit, crime is virtually non-existent, now to terrorism. In all areas especially tourist ares ther arfe Egyptian Tourism Police, these are heavily armed officers, you probably wouldn't walk 30 metres without bumping into one. Even all tour operators, arange their buses to depart at certain, times where they are escorted (along with other tour buses sometimes up to 150) by the tourism police in large convoys. The government sees the safety of tourists VITAL because it is egypt's number 1 industry. Now for where to go, I would pick a tour of all of egypt, such as Cairo, Sharm EL Sheikh, Alexandria, Luxor. YOu should find pretty good deals. But let my me tell you Sharm EL Sheikh is a MUST VISIT. A visit to egypt can never be complete without visiting Sharm El SHeikh. It is ideal for your honeymoon, with its exotic red sea beaches, and the dazzling resort, perfect for diving if you are a diver. Hope i helped ;)

i actually live here in cairo and yes it is safe to visit , coming from belfast though , prepare for a culture shock , you will be pestered by beggars , and the local taxi drivers will try to rip you off , cairo is not the greenest/cleanest of cities by far , however the pyramids are here and the citadel is well worth a visit

"downDohaQatar", the beggars arent so bad and the taxi drivers dont rip you off ALL the time, Egypt is a lovely place to visit, just some little minuses.

I went to Egypt last year, and all was well.At first, I was very shocked about having a heavily armed policeman guarding our bus. I enjoyed to learn more about the culture of ancient Egypt. A visit to the Museum of Cairo is a must!I also enjoyed Luxor very much. The Nile cruise was OK.Alexandria was also OK. It is very safe to walk in the streets of Cairo. You really dont have to be concerned about pickpockets etc The only problem is when the terrorists decide to bomb!

Before I forget, dont enter the pyramids. I HATED that. Much better staying outside, looking at them. They are nice! Inside there is nothing really.. it is too hot, there is no air for you to breathe. Horrible.

A group of us (three couples) went to Egypt last year (FEB). We really had very little concern about the safety there. When we got there, everything was really great. As it turns out, if you take a tour, the country send a plain clothes cop/security guy with a big hidden gun alongo. We always felt safe. It was a terrific trip. We had two days in Cairo (where you must see the sphinx and pyramids, of course, and you ust go to the museum there. We took a cruise down the Nile, and it was great, since we went to LUXOR (an absolute must since there are a whole bunch of things to see there, including the Temple of Karnak). We also went south on the Nile to Kom Ombo (great) and Edfu (great). The best deal is CLUB ABC (go to www.clubabc.com). There deal includes almost all food, almost all tours, and they keep you very busy doing great stuff. And it only about $2,500 (and you'll have the most memorable trip of your life). Have fun. I was just in Egypt (Cairo and Nile cruise) in late November and felt perfectly safe; I'd say the biggest problem as a woman may be harassment. I spent much of my time in Cairo exploring the sites and the city on my own and as a Western woman I sometimes got cat calls and rude gestures, but I never felt threatened. On the Nile cruise I traveled with 3 other women and a man and we found that harrassment went down in numbers and in the presence of other men. Since you'll be on your Honeymoon and therefore traveling with a man I bet you'll feel little harassment. On a side note, I didn't get much begging but agree on the earlier taxi comments. If the driver starts bargaining with you about the fare when you get in the cab, get out (payment is at your discretion and should not be discussed). At the end of your ride, get out of the taxi first and pay through the window, and then walk away without turning back. This way, you avoid arguing about the price.
