Need a recommendation for trails in Big Sur |
|
Hey knowledgeable people, I'll be taking a trip up the 1 HWY in November. Visiting Julia Pfeiffer park before, I wanted to hike there again but i know most trails are closed after the fire. Any suggestions for where to go? (Andrew Molena? Point Lobos?). Hoping to experience the woods and scenery. Thanks a lot in advance!

All the trails on the west side of Highway 1 are open, including Andrew Molera State Park. I believe the short trail to McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer is open, but all other trails within JPSP remain closed. Some of the foot bridges were lost to the fire and need to be rebuilt. If you're coming up Highway 1 from LA, there's a really steep trail down to the beach at Ragged Point and another trail at Salmon Creek about 10 miles further up the road. Salmon Creek is located in one of those lovely hairpin turns and is signed. Not a long trail, but a pleasant one along the creek. Point Lobos is closer to Carmel and has several great trails to choose from.

Thanks kibblesmom! How's Andrew Molera different from Point Lobos? In terms of nice scenery, which is better? thanks again

That I can't answer, as I have not taken the opportunity to explore Andrew Molera. I know there are photos of each park on the net you can browse to see which area you find most appealing. Point Lobos has great views looking back to Carmel, the open sea, coves, tide pools and an interesting orange growth on the pine trees. Camping is an option in Andrew Molera (I believe), while Point Lobos is a day use area only. I've heard that Jack's Peak above Monterey offers good hiking opportunities, as well.

The loop at Molera is almost 9 wonderful miles. The views are spectacular (better than Ewoldsen - if that's possible.) The majority of the hike you are desending towards the water with views of the lighthouse in the distance, ending up right on the beach at one point and then walking thru a meadow (where we saw a bobcat, a deer, and a fox). It's a beautiful day, pack a lunch or a snack for when you summit and refuel for the hike down.
