Where to go?!? |
|
Hello! I finish university by the end of January and was thinking of going to Australia for a month or 2. My friend lives in Sydney and we were thinking of a road trip...however we dont know where to go, and what to see. He suggested we start off from sydney, then go to canberra, then to melbourne, then by boat to tasmania, back to melbourne, then to adelaide, then up to alice springs, then somehow we get to cairns, then brisbane, newcastle, and back to sydney. What do you think?! We only have a month for that. Is it to much? Is there something we MUST see which is on our way?! I also have other questions... but for now i think i asked enough! Thx Karl |

well, it is possible but you will only get to spend a night or two at each place and will sick to death of the car real fast. Remember Australia is a big country and the distances are vast. Some of the road you would cover is very scenic but some would be nothing but bush/scrub for miles and miles. Given the time of year you may need to consider dropping Cairns from the list - it will be the wet/cyclone season, very hot and humid and deadly stingers in the ocean. It will also cut about 3000kms( the outback section being arduous at times) of driving from your trip which will make the rest of your itinerary viable. the MUST sees on your way will include Uluru, Wine country outside Adelaide and numerous beautiful beach towns in South East Queensland, Northern NSW. We will need to know more about what your likes and dislikes are to go further.

Karl, the time of year may be important to you, depends on if the weather will make any difference to you. The end of Jan is right in the hottest part of the year for us, so it will be warm wherever you go. School holidays last most of January, so if you are coming at the end of Jan, you should miss most of the major crowds, although it will still be busy on the weekends. In my mind you have mentioned too many places, that is a lot of driving. Regarding the weather, it will be warm to very warm in Tasmania 22-30C, Melbourne will be a few degrees warmer and similar weather to Adelaide (both Melb and Adelaide can get days over 40C in summer but luckily they are not too common). It is a dry heat in the southern states. Sydney will be similar temps but as you head north you will find it more humid. When you get up into Queensland, especially right up north in Cairns, you will find it is the wet season and it will be very humid and very hot. You would have to take some care whilst driving up there in the wet season. Back in Central Australia (Alice Springs), the heat will be dry but remember it is desert and temps will be extreme. You would have to enjoy very hot temps to head inland and you would also want a very good car with air con. You could consider driving the east coast from Brisbane down to Adelaide, this would be a good trip over a month and would give you plenty to see. I would stick mainly to the coast but you could go inland after Sydney to the Blue Mountains and then later in your trip, head inland after Narooma on the NSW south coast to Canberra and then enter Victoria through the alpine roads, across to somewhere like Bright. After reaching Melbourne, you could drive the Great Ocean road and into Adelaide via places like Mount Gambier,Robe, Kangaroo Island and the Barossa Valley.

you start off saying "for a month or two" then later say you only have a month. if you do have longer than a month - or are able to make it longer than a month - then you will enjoy your time far more because you wont be so rushed and can stop places longer rather than always be on the go. The above advice re weather conditions is good and important advice.

Hello! Thank you for replying to my post so quickly. The information you gave me was very important! I told my friend abt what you said, and he then decided to change the plan to this: Sydney --> Canberra --> Melbourne --> Tasmania --> Melbourne --> Adelaide (ALL BY CAR) Then Adelaide --> Brisbane (by plane) Then Brisbane --> Gold Coast --> Newcastle --> Sydney Is this better??! Will we have time to see enough in those places?! and is there something on the way thats more important to see, that i should point out to him?! btw i said 1-2 months, because in march my friend will start his masters degree, while ill be free. However I was thinking that maybe for 2 weeks ill stay in Sydney (since I would only have passed by it, and not really seen anything of it), and then maybe travel for 2 weeks to New Zealand... but I am still not sure of this last part... Again thx alot I really appreciate it!

Sydney --> Canberra --> Melbourne --> Tasmania --> Melbourne --> Adelaide (ALL BY CAR) That looks good, I do however highly suggest you see the South Coast. See thread below for additional information regarding this coastal drive. tripadvisor.com/Travel-g255055-c3069/Austral… Then Adelaide --> Brisbane (by plane) - Excellent idea. Another suggestion is to drive the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne to Adelaide. This drive is fabulous and better than the Brisbane to Sydney drive IMHO. You could also continue onto Kangaroo Island before hitting Adelaide. Then Brisbane --> Gold Coast --> Newcastle --> Sydney For additional information regarding this coastal route click on the thread below. tripadvisor.com/Travel-g255055-c3001/Austral… "Is this better??! Will we have time to see enough in those places?! and is there something on the way thats more important to see, that i should point out to him?!" It also depends on your own interests ie..do you like beaches/ swimming/ snorkeling or museums and walking etc.etc.... As others have stated January is our summer and its very hot so being near the sea is a huge plus whilst traveling at this time of the year. A month itinerary.(suggestion). Sydney - 4 days. Drive coastal route to Melbourne - 5 days. Melbourne - 3 days. Drive GOR to Adelaide - 5 days Kangaroo Island - 3 days. Fly Adelaide to Brisbane - 2 days. Drive Brisbane to Sydney - 5 days. Sydney - 3 days. PS. How's Krakow ..I really enjoyed your city ! EM.
