Previous advice is excellent

Still a long day for now without onight...about 2 hours to the fields

IMHO..4 rent a car at least from Canberra which will be most effective

Unless of course you don't want to ski and the Brindabella ranges oblige with a dummping

(BIG W and Macknee...anti snow dance for we of 4 july please)

..many thanks - will look at the link you attached!

We dont need to ski - just so long as we get on some snow LOL (2 of the girls have never seen snow) .. so do u think it would be best to get a hire car - not sure about chains, slippery roads etc but I guess there wont be a lot of snow around in 2 weeks time !

If we get an early start we should be fine !! (Flying out of Canberra Monday a.m.)

Thredbo had a dump in feb and then again in April so chances of snow somehwere are good. The "season" opens next w/e so making should start almost as soom as weather obliges.

I'd go with chains or a 4WD at the least but..if there has been no "real" snowfalls these would be overkill.

LOL...do your own snow dance and maybe you'll bget the dump and it'll be good for us! Brindabellas are about 30 min drive from parliament

If you just want to see snow and play around in it a bit the Brindabellas do get some snowfalls and this is just a short drive from Canberra.

It's something to keep in mind as a quicker option if there happens to be snow the weekend you are here. But for GW I'll be doing anti-snow dances. Can anyone think of anything more un-snowlike than this?

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=nrhf_zgtmAg

If visiting the snow is a high priority for your trip I would go up to the actual skifields, though it is a long day as GW said.

I haven't been to Thredbo in winter but even in summer it has the feel of an alpine village so I think it would be lovely in winter. I've been to Perisher and Smiggins but my knowledge of those in winter is very out of date. The most recent trip (still many years ago) was to Blue Cow. That is only accessible by SkiTube. The carpark is below the snowline and when you come out on top of the snow-covered mountain on a sunny day it's just magical! You can also get out at Perisher.

www.perisherblue.com.au/winter/skitube/

If you hire a car it is compulsory to carry snow chains during the snow season on some roads. Btw I wonder if the rental companies have any rules about where you can take their vehicles? Hubby, who used to go regularly, said he never had to use his snow chains in June (only a few times in late July-August).

…nsw.gov.au/parksafety/KosciuszkoNPRoadsafet…

According to the above website you can hire chains at various places. I remember hiring snowboots (not skiboots) at the facility at Blue Cow. Take sunglasses for the glare off the snow. And don't forget the sunscreen!

I hope you're doing that dance with Mr Mack!

I'll try at this end with Guru and perhaps we'll have success!

Have a look at this site, it gives snow conditions at all the major resorts

http://www.ski.com.au/reports/

For busses from Canberra to Snow have a look at www.murrays.com.au/default.asp…

and

transborderexpress.com.au/wintersnowservices…

GW, I will do my best but if the current weather is any indication I won't need to try to Hard. Any form of precipitaion is a great rarity at the moment.

Sorry, I haven't seen any and it doesn't sound likely for this weekend. Sometimes the forecast will actually say "snow down to 1000m" or whatever.
