I tried posting this twice in the 'Europe' forum for an unbiased opinion but it did not work.

A group of friends and I are looking to attend a football game in either Prague, Munich, Amsterdam, or Paris. We would like the true European Football experience of loud cheering, great stadium, great team, amazing football-fever atmosphere (e.g. Barcelona or Real Madrid games).

Which of these cities would allow for such an experience and where can we purchase tickets for October?

Thanks!

Dont' despair - you will get an answer, more than you bargained for, as soon as my dad gets back on Friday. A treat for the weekend. Or may be not.

Well - don't count on any of the above in Prague :) It is quite homely and down to earth, but with average crowds of about 3000 it is quite rare to get an amazing football-fever atmosphere as you describe.

I reckon of that list either Munich or Amsterdam are your best bet if you want that type of thing - in Munich there is TSV 1860 Muenchen and Bayern, both of whom play at the Allianz Arena (it turns blue for 1860 and red for Bayern games), but the former play in the German 2nd division tsv1860.de/de/stadion/allianz_arena/index.php

so there shouldn't be a problem getting tickets.

FC Bayern is a differnt kettle of fish - according to their website (in English, but the ticketing bit is all in German) www.fcbayern.t-home.de/en/index.php…

you can buy tickets on the day at the stadium if it is not sold out beforehand but it depends on who they are playing - some games are more popular than others. You would have to put a post in the Munich forum for more info on that.

Similarly Amsterdam - they have Ajax - at least their ticketing section is in English http://english.ajax.nl/web/show

I wouldn't go to Paris St. Germain - their fans are notoriously violent and racist and they generally go to either fight (even each other) or go on strike in protest at their team's poor performance. Saying that, Ajax's fans are no angels, either...

If you really want an excellent atmosphere with top-class football that you can watch in total safety then the only place is England. There are plenty of premier league clubs where you can get match tickets easily (Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea are always sold out, though).

Thanks for all the info folks!

GCEK, I wish I could attend a UK game but I will not be there for a couple more years. I will certainly stop by one day and catch a Manchester United game. For now, I have the "problem" of having to choose between four awesome cities...I wish all my problems were like this.

I will surely take your advice on Paris and, so far, it seems that Ajax are winning.

THanks!

I have been to a couple of games in Munich but that was many years a go and I was there with German friends, great fun but they are a bloody noisy lot.

I have been to several games in Prague over the last few years and have always enjoyed them, crowds are not the biggest or most vocal of the football matches I have been to ,but friendly and good fun.Without a doubt the Bohemian fans in Prague are the craziest, crowds are not huge and the ground is quite small (easy to get to from the center of Prague)but a more enthusiastic fan base you will not find elsewhere.I really enjoyed the match there.

Prices are very cheap ( about 100czk possibly a little more) cheap beer and snacks in the ground too.

The Bohenians have the best mascot I have seen in any game ANYWHERE!.It is a Kangaroo and to watch him taking practice penalties against the goalkeeper and seeing his celebration when a goal is scored is one of the joyest sights in football.

Small, ground ,small crowd but an atmosphere and experience to rival if not better the famous places and teams.

BTW there is a photo of the Viktoria Zizkov ground in My Pictures on TA,we had hoped to go to a game there but it was postponed because of a frozen pitch,we did however manage to get into the ground to take a few pictures.

There you go jblaze, plenty of answers. I suppose in Prague you could see Sparta - big stadium, easy to get tickets, rowdy crowd, trouble on occasions, but unfortunately plenty of racial abuse.

try good old ebay for tickets. munich is pretty often sold out but there are plenty of tickets on ebay available, bad thing is they're around double the normal price. last time i tried 2 years ago for champions league semi or quarterfinal versus milan and tickets were around 125 euro. normal bundesliga is cheaper. another good option for munich tickets is bus charter, they always got tickets but you have to pay for the whole trip, around 100 euros. also, stuttgart is near munich with a premier league team. coming in october, there should be champions league games in either cities, probably some world cup qualifiers as well, check uefa.com for more info...

Thanks again everyone.

I will certainly have a look in ebay. I just wanted to make sure the atmosphere would be close to what I was picturing. Something like what you see on the Euro Cup (except that it would certainly WAY less hectic since its not the Euro Cup!)

It also all depends on who they are playing, and what they are playing for, of course! You can have some meaningless mid-table clashes with absolutely no atmosphere. I have been to Old Trafford on a few occasions and it was pretty dead, even though there were close to 80K people in there - the 'prawn sandwich brigade' as Roy Keane so eloquently put it.

The last time I went to Bayern was when they were playing in the old Olympiastadion and it was a relatively unimportant cup game against a lower-league side, and they won 12-2 (I think it is their highest ever win), which raised the atmosphere a bit!
