Hi everyone.

I have also posted this question in the Oklahoma forum but thought i might get some help here also. We are going to be driving from Bartlesville to Hutchinson and am wondering which way we should go.

It's either head north into Kansas and then West towards Wichita. I'm not sure what kind of country and towns we will be driving through there... My husband would be happy to drive past grain farms (we are farmers).

Or the other option as someone mentioned could also be a nice drive is to head west from Bartlesville, through Ponca city and then up to Hutchinson that way.

So if you have any suggestions on which way to go and what we'll see along the way, i'd love to hear about it!

Going north, then west on 166, you pass trhough Caney with its small Safari Zoological Park, past Sedan with its Emmett Kelly Museum and beautiful Butcher Falls, and within a 1/4 mile of Cowley State Fishing Lake with its spectacular falls www.kansastravel.org/cowleylakewaterfall.htm

You will go past many grain and goat farms along this route. There are some rolling hills.

Here is another suggestion. Go west out of Bartlesville on Highway 60 until it intersects with Highway 99. This will be about 30 km. Then go north on 99 until it intersects with Highway 400 in Kansas, about another 120km. Then turn left(west) This road will take you into Wichita. This will take you through some of the area known as the Flint Hills. It is the largest area of tall grass prairie left in the USA. After turning onto 400(20-30 minutes) you will come to a wind turbine farm and a sign for the Beaumont Hotel which is worth a stop if it is meal time. www.beaumonthotelks.com

There is a by pass around Wichita that will put you on the road to Hutchinson if you are interested.

I agree with taking US 400. The wind farm at Beaumont is worth seeing -- there is a rest stop north of the little town where you can stop for a somewhat distant view, but you should then drive through town and out the gravel road to the actual turbines. If you husband is a farmer, I almost guarantee he'll be fascinated by these machines. Also, US 400 is a fairly new road, of good design and in good condition. It gets a little slow going from Augusta into Wichita, but you can catch K-96 on the east edge of Wichita and it will whisk you easily around the east and north sides of town, putting you out the northwest corner headed into Hutch. Go with US 400.
