We have never gone Rt 13, but avoid 64 and 95 at all cost. We just came from the beach this past weekend and the traffic on both roads was stopped at 10:30am. When you get to the Hampton Roads area, go Int 664, then 64 for alittle ways and then Great Bridge Expressway. I don't know where you are coming from, but 301 and Rt 17 are good ways also.

well, not exactly. but we did use 13 coming from florida one time enroute to rehoboth beach DE, bringing a u-haul of furniture. it's been a long time ago & i have absolutely no way to know about time comparisons, but except for a small bit of "excitement" in the norfolk/va beach vicinity, it was a much calmer & more scenic & interesting drive than the alternative. i didn't like the bridge/tunnel much, but that was because i had to keep switching from my sunglasses to my regular ones while going 60 mph LOL

Last year we drove from Annapolis crossing the Bay Bridge and taking Rt 50 to 13 to the Outerbanks. It was quite nice. The only real traffic we hit was getting thru Norfolk/Virginia Beach but even that was not bad. There are some desolate places where there are few cars on the road and that made it worth it to us, but you do hit stoplights, so if you are worried about gas savings it may not be the trip for you. If I was to do it again, though, I would go the same way. There are some great little seafood shacks we stopped and had lunch at. Clams, shrimp, crab, etc. It was fun and we enjoyed the laid back atmospere. It was quite stress free.
