Planning a trip in mid-September thru Southern Utah:

St. George-Zion-Bryce Canyon-Capital Reef & Torrey

Arches & Blanding

Monument Valley to Sedona AZ

Sedona to Lake Havasau City.

Any and all helpful tips & suggestions about trip planning, motels, restaurants etc. appreciated.

Thanks

My first questions are how long do you have and what is your starting point?

Are you driving up from Texas or are you flying to one of the cities in the area (Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas etc)?

If you are flying and renting a car do you mind the extra charges to drop it off at a different airport than you started from?

Hi and welcome abourd this forum.

Probably you are doing Las Vegas-Las Vegas re your schedule, but the length of your trip is important as Kajo has said. I don't see Grand Canyon NP in your itinerary. Are you skipping GC? Why do you want to go to Blanding or even LHC.

was also wondering about blanding and LHC. are these destinations or a place to sleep along your route? (how far can we get tonight....) I would add the grand canyon, nix LHC even if you have been to the canyon before! The amount of time you have would affect the comments and advise you get...

for example, i'd spend another night in moab and do the extra time the next morning, or go to montecello which is closest to other portions of canyonlands national park, other than the moab sections.... the drive from moab to monument valley isn't all that bad, and wouldn't need to be broken up if you planned to stay say at gouldings the night after touring MV.

/thanks for the info....will fly into Vegas then drive to St George, loop thru the Natl Parks back thru Sedona then stop overnight in LHC on way back to Vegas. Dont know much about Moab at all.

Main concern is we'll have 2 80yr olds with us so we wont be hiking & are interested in driving & sightseeing as much as possible in the N.Parks.

Thanks again.

Lake Havasu definitely is not on your way back to Las Vegas. It may seem it is on the maps but it's not. Best way is to drive Sedona via I40 and 93 to Las Vegas which app. will take 5 hours. Also, we have stayed in St. George and liked it but on a trip like yours, maybe try Springdale at the south entrance of Zion. I would like to give you a great route, but we still don't know how long you have for this trip. Even without walking 1 day in Zion and half a day in Bryce. And 2 days in Moab. You can see a lot of things without hiking. And also yes, Red Rock SP just west of Las Vegas is a nice place for a visit. Please let us know how long you can take for this trip. 12-14 days if you want to have a more of less relaxing trip.

My advice is to have a good map.

The best map of the area you're going to is the auto club (AAA) map called Indian Country. It covers in great detail southern Utah, northern Arizona and four corners. The back side of the map has long listings of everything to see and do there.

If you don't belong to the auto club I've seen these for sale on ebay.

Great driving sights are the Kolob fingers side of Zion National Park. This is spectacular scenery and you drive to all of it. It is right off of I-15 just north of St. George and probably on your route, depending on how you get to Bryce.
