Hi All,

I am thinking of heading over to teach in the International school in Tripoli. Would love any information about the area. I am a 26yr old single lady, is it safe to travel alone... ????

Thanks in advance,

Catherine.

Hi Catherine,

I was out in Tripoli last week on business and went to look round the International School.

They have broken up for the summer holidays so there wasnt any children around.

I am moving out there from Surrey with my wife and two little children, so I spent a lot of time seeing how safe it was for them all.

I was pleasantly surprised, I have been to a lot of mMiddle East countries and thought Libya as Muslim place would be similar, but it isnt.

Women are treated well and they drive around and shop on their own, western women walk around in T-shirts, but generaly they keep a lot more covered than over here, out of respect. You would soon burn in anycase.

The driving over there is about the worst I have ever experienced, the four lane dual carriageways often have six lanes of cars trying to fit down them and then someone comes the other way taking a short cut. That was just on the journey from the airport when I got there. I wouldnt advise driving there unless you are in an army tank or a rally driver.

The heat and hot winds are something else but after a few days I didnt really notice it, its a worse heat on London underground!

We are moving hopefully so the kids can start at the British School at the begining of term in September.

There was a waiting list for them if we wanted to get them in at the International School.

Please let us know if you do go there as it will be nice to meet fellow Brits.

My wife Jen is 35 and Ella is 5 1/2 and Jacob is 4

Jen is a Sister at the Hospital here and may be able to work at the Heart Hospital in Tripoli, but we will see what happens when we get there

Regards

Nigel

Hi Catherine,

Did you decide whether to go over and teach or not? I currently have 2 hours to decide whether I want to go and teach over there as was offered a position to start on 2nd September. I've only just finished my degree, am 22 and only ever lived 30 miles away from home but I am desperate for this experience. I'd love to hear what you chose to do!

Thanks,

Emily

Ah, I've just seen that you decided to stay put. Could I ask why that was?
