taxifare from Phnom Penh int'l airport to Pavilion Hotel |
|
Hello! Appreciate your input on the estimated taxifare and journey. There will be two of us. Thanks! |

+1 for an answer to this... thinking of visiting in April next year.

Taxi $8-$9, tuk tuk $5-$6. The traffic can be absolute mayhem during the rush hours so journey times can vary-allow 20-30 minutes. Tuk tuks and taxis are right outside the arrivals terminal-you will be mobbed by the touts and drivers the second you walk out!

Hi ,I am not sure about paying $8-$9 dollars for a taxi fare , i know they had a standard charge of $7 from the airport to city which is quite expensive considering you can hire a car and driver for the day for around $25-$30 , however fuel costs have risen steeply in Cambodia this year so maybe the drivers have jumped on an opportunity to increase their already over priced fare , i guess it's not expensive if your a westerner but it tends to set a benchmark which increases the costs on locals also who would not appreciate having to pay such a high price.Haggle with the drivers and touts one of them will take you for a reasonable price , you will not have to haggle long before you get bundle into a taxi, traffic is terrible around start and finsh of the work day but nothing like major western capitals , the fare is for the car not the individual so the two can share the cost , Tuk Tuks are are great in easy traffic but keep a good eye on your luggage especially small bags passing motos can snatch and go quickly if given the opportunity.

I was there in May this year, just some observations from my time there- Petrol has risen sharply in Cambodia, like everywhere else in the world the locals are bemoaning the price increase as they are even less able to afford it then us westerners. Its my understanding that taxis (and tuk tuks in Siem Reap) need an annual permit (which is very expensive) to access the airports to get fares, which adds to their costs as well, thats why there is a boom gate at the airport entrance-they check the drivers permits as they enter. The vast majority of locals wouldnt use a taxi, not when most of them can fit up to 5 people on a motorbike! and I would be confident that the locals dont get charged quite as much as tourists anyway. Traffic is also terrible around lunch time too, when the kids go home from school-i found the traffic in Phnom Penh was as bad as anywhere i have been, but the difference is, as nobody seems to follow any road rules, it flows and there is zero road rage. Cambodia isnt Bali, the people there are desperately poor and i personally wouldnt haggle to save one american dollar, on the contrary, i found i was more than happy to give a little more (when appropriate) and found that the Cambodians, who are lovely people, were extremely grateful for it. If you really want to save a dollar or two, walk out of the airport to the main road and flag down a passing tuk tuk, but its hardly worth it.

I am not aware of any annual fee for taxi drivers and in all the times i have been to Pochentong airport i have never seen any security at the boom gates on entry to the airport only an electronic ticket dispenser that opens the gate once the ticket is taken , however you could be correct about a fee but i am unsure how they police that with no security on entry , i know they must pay parking costs on exit and that would add to costs ,i wouldn't begrudge Cambodians a dollar either and i wasn't trying to encourage anyone to be miserable but i have spent the best part of 5 years in and out of Cambodia and i have seen locals complain about transport costs and know that it is foreigners paying to much that causes these increases and this happened before the fuel price exploded ,why take a local for 1000 riel when a foreigner will pay 4 to 5 times and more for the same trip , something to think about when paying to much.

Hi Magoo, my info was given to me by a bunch of taxi drivers i was talking to outside the airport one night, they showed me some laminated cards (in Khmer so i had no idea what they said)saying they had to have them to access the airport and said they were an expense to them, but they could have been buttering me up so they could overcharge me :). At Pochentong i saw a guy in the booth at the boom gates twice, dressed in military looking clothes but he seemed more interested in what he was reading than who was coming and going. At Siem Reap airport, i went with a tuk tuk driver out into the car park, thinking he was parked in there somewhere, he ended up taking me to the perimeter fence and asked me to climb through a hole because he couldnt afford to pay the fees to access the airport to pick up fares! So there probably is something to it but my version could be way off base, and im happy to be corrected. Its hard for people new to Cambodia (like i was) to know what to do eh? When you pay AUD $35 to get to Perth airport on the way out, then someone will take you into Phnom Penh for $8 ($5 in a tuk tuk), its such a bargain that you happily pay it, its a shame if that then somehow ends up hurting the locals. I only used taxi's once, the rest of the time i used tuk tuk's-much preferred them.

Before we closed in May taxi drivers were getting 9 dollars US into town. Very reasonable considering they had'nt gone up in 9 years. Gas is 5750 riel per litre (just under 1.50 US. Also consider this when taking a taxi or tuk tuk around town. The drivers need to make money and cover wear and tear on their vehicles. There is a new taxi service in town also that is charging a couple of dollars per kilometer.

Official charge for taxis right outside the terminal is $9,up from $7. But one can walk fifty meters in to the car park and get an unofficial taxi for $7. Fuel is 5600 riel a litre so one cant begrudge the taxi fares going up.I had an unofficial driver a few weeks ago who whinged all the way home so I gave him $10. Cambodians are dirt poor,a little extra dosh is always appreciated and tourists who screw them down to the last riel are being unfair.
